Title: HELP PLEASE - Is the Burrum River a green zone????
Post by: Earl on May 01, 2011, 06:49:29 PM
Can anyone help?

I’ve been doing some reading on the Burrum River and know a couple of Guides plus others have been fishing and guiding on the Burrum, but according to DERM this is marked as a GREEN zone.  Is that correct?

Some people say it is others say it isn’t? ???

According to the link (below map is an extract) the green zone starts at point 54 & 55 tidal zone upstream, which is just west of the Bruce Highway bridge. Since when has Marine National Parks applied to non-tidal waters?

http://www.derm.qld.gov.au/media/parks_and_forests/marine_parks/great_sandy/great_sandy_zoning.pdf (http://www.derm.qld.gov.au/media/parks_and_forests/marine_parks/great_sandy/great_sandy_zoning.pdf)

If you can fish the Burrum do you need a SIP?

Confused
Earl

I need to stop reading it’s hurting my head.

Even the DERM website is bloody confusing?

According to map above and text below the Burrum is a Green Zone

But wait there’s more, it not a green zone above the weir

I’ll just have one more drink. maybe that's why my head is hurting?

I believe upstream of the Bruce highway or the lower weir is green zone, down stream is yellow zone.

I recon it's rediculous to have a regulated river on a green zone. What is the reason for green zones? If its to protect pristine waters, then surely the removal of Lenthalls Dam wall & the weirs down from there would achieve more for the river habitat & species than a green zone would. Oh wait, that's right, they only apply it where it suits & to are subject to political convenience.....

No you don't need a SIP to fish any river.

Cheers,

Fitzy..

Thanks Fitzy,

I was aware that you don’t require a SIP to fish a river, wasn’t sure about upstream of the weirs.

I will ring DERM again on Tuesday to confirm the green zone, they have two maps with conflicting information, But it’s not uncommon for the government website to have conflicting information, it’s like using 2L milk bottles for floats which are less than 150mm in one dimension.

Quote
Marking traps and set lines
Anyone who uses a trap or set line for freshwater fishing must have a tag on the trap or set line showing the owner´s surname and address. If the trap is not fixed to something stationary above the water level while being used, it must have a light coloured float attached.
The float must feature the owner´s first name and surname and be at least 15 cm in each of its dimensions. A two or three-litre milk container may be used as a float. A set line must be attached to a stationary object such as a branch, wooden stake or boat.

Thanks
Earl

Amazing, first its the owners surname, then in the next breath its the owners first name and surname!!

Best I go put my first name on my red claw trap floats as well as my last, dont want to be pinged by some enthusiastic rare as hens teeth sweet water fisheries officer for a typo on my be-half.
Thanks for the heads up Earl.

Yeah upstream of the highway bridge is a green zone. Not sure how far it extends, I know you can fish at least one of the weirs (getting to them is the hard part).
