Hi all,
I am taking my mate fishing tomorrow morning to Maroon dam. I have kinda talked it up about how i am going to get him on to his first lure caught fish and am now my already poor fishing reputation is on the line.
I spent a few hours at Maroon 2 weeks ago for not a single fish and it felt like i couls not escape the weed. I was throwing around SX60's, Squirrels, and spinnerbaits to the edges. I'm hoping someone can give me some ideas on what to do in this lake as i never seem to have any luck.
This may be a stupid question but how do you fish the weed without fouling up the lure every cast?
Please help me claim some kinda glory so i don't have to face the constant ridicule at work on Tuesday. I will throw up some photos if i have any luck.

I reckon you need to either polarise the weeds visually, use a side imaging sounder to see the gaps in the weeds, or feel your way through them.
Hold off the edge and work an arc, then move forward a bit then repeat.
OR, something I used to do in defined weed edges is actually nose the boat up into the weed, then stand at the back of the boat & fish parallel to the weed edge. Move up 50 meters then repeat.

Try rigging your soft plastics weedless too. As a side benefit they are a lot cheaper to lose that those Jackalls.

Ahhh you could tell him to hold off for a few weeks when the weed gets pretty thin ? I just stick with shallow divers and surface lures early morning and late arvo till dark but warmest part of the day might see more action. If nothing else works for me i troll about 5m off the weedbeds i can see about 8 ft down and have caught a dozen that way.
Last resort throw celtas for spangled perch they love em

Cheers Gents. I will try rigging some weedless plastics and shallow diving minnows around. The worst thing that can happen is another donught and a hiding from the boys at work. I will keep trying every few weekends until i start to crack a pattern. I will be hitting the dam around 5am so i hope to put up some photos tomorrow evening.

Don't hide from those blokes just don't tell'em you went until you catch something. The best fisho anywhere can get the occasional donut. You just don't have to like it or tell anyone.

What are suggesting JD? That a fisho be less than forthcoming with the truth? I thought we were supposed to go home & tell everyone we cleaned up.
Male Fishos universally all:
- never skunk through any fault of our own (bloody weather, bloody line failure, bloody drag was sticky, wrong moon, wrong tide, wind turned..... etc
- own the fastest car/boat or relevant toy
- have large appendages
.......just ask us.........

Had lottsa fun on Bass at Maroon, fishing right into the beds edge or into pockets between clumps. As suggested, softies (Paddle Tail like Atomic/Slider) rigged weedless should work fine...keep the head weight down so they sink real slow as you slow roll them back.

As promised my report for Maroon
We arrived at the Dam just on 5am Saturday morning, by the time we set up the boat it was 5:30 and just turning light. We headed to the opposite side of the boat ramp to throw surface lures around the lilly pads in hopes of finding some of that famed Maroon surface action. At one point i had my Dog X caught in some lilly pads and instead of retreiving the lure i set down that rod and picked up my baitcaster to throw a BJ's custom spinnerbait. I was casting towards the few bits of timber and on my 5th cast hooked onto a decent yellowbelly. After a decent fight i had landed the fish took a quick dodgy photo and in my haste to return the fish back to the water I forgot to measure her.
After that we spent the morning working the edges with plastics, topwater and diving minnows for no more action. I left my sunglasses at home so trying to see the weed banks was made even more difficult. By 11am the weather was looking like it was about to play up so we pulled the pin and headed home.
I had a great day out on the water and will be hitting it again in the next few week. I am still open to tips and pointers.

I fly fish Maroon mainly. The most productive method I have had for the weed edges is to fish the "face". I cast just into the weed, then retrieve the fly until it is just out from the face of the weed. Then I pause for about 5-10 seconds depending on my mood, then employ two quick short strips. Alot of the time the little buggers are hiding in there and shoot out to nab my offering. Method also works pretty well with lightly weighted beetlespins with a number 1 blade.
