NEWS Happy New Year.
Thanks for all your support for 2010 and I look forward to keeping up to date with the fishing conditions again in 2011.
This week the weather has returned to fine and sunny and the last two days have been the hottest so far this season with temperatures reaching over 30 degrees C.
The lake level started to drop yesterday with what I would say would be due to electricity demands while Victoria and South Australia are having a current heat wave.
The fishing is starting to return to normal for this time of year with early and late in the day the best times to fish the lake unless you have a boat capable of deep water trolling using lead core lines or downriggers.
On the streams the water levels have dropped significantly and are fishing much better now on dry fly.
There is a prediction of cooler weather and possible rain later next week so we will have to wait and see if that changes the fishing conditions at all.
All in all we should be in for a great January of fishing.

LAKE LEVEL and TEMPERATURE
The lake water temperature has risen to 21 degrees C.
Let’s have a look at what the fishing is going to be like over the next few weeks.

Trolling.
With the lake level now dropping you may find the fish in close early and late in the day but moving out to deeper water by mid morning.
Trolling small minnow lures off the lead core lines through the shallows at sunrise and sunset is producing mostly rainbows now with the occasional good brown trout.13 gram Tasmanian Devils are still going best with possibly yellowing lures better now, with the number 50 Frog pattern, the SW Lime Green Yellowwings and Y Freddo very popular for the brighter days. Y48 and Holographic (mostly brown lures) Tasmanian Devils in the Duel Depth best in the very early morning or later evening.
Rapalas, trolled off lead lines is the best lure for catching the brown trout or bibber Atlantic Salmon.
Other lures worth a try are the Thunderbolts in brown colours for early morning and green and golds for later morning. Rebel Crickhoppers are now also starting to catch some fish and the Gillies spinners behind attractors like ford fenders are also great. Try the Mepps Streamers behind attractors also for the big browns.
East Jindabyne islands, (not many left and be careful when trolling this area) Hayshed Bay, Lion and Cub Islands and the South arm have been fishing very well.
Lake Bait Fishing  (Primarily most rivers and streams in the Snowy Mountains Region are fly and lure only, We recommend that you first check with the Department of Primary Industries (NSW Fishing rules) as to which rivers in the area you can legally bait fish in. IF IN DOUBT DON’T BAITFISH IN RIVERS!)
For those that are land based you might find float fishing best at the moment will all the grass and weeds in the water. At least you will not be getting snagged all the time. The hotter weather has meant that the bottom feeding has picked up with the best baits being worms or bardi grubs.
The big secret at the moment is to fish with bail arm open and make sure you grease the line to make sure you keep it out of the slime on the bottom of the lake. (Try silicone Muslin on your line so as not to damage it)
Scrub worms off the bottom and a power bait dropper is also the best rig for deeper water fishing when the days are bright. Good reports on Bardi Grubs fish off the bottom also in very deep water.
Best areas for bait fishing at the moment have been, Rushes Bay, Curiosity Rocks, Waste Point, The Snowy Arm and East Jindabyne pumping station.

Lake Spinning
Water level is now dropping and so the fish move to deep water as the day gets brighter.
Start the day off by fishing the shallower bays and then move out to deeper water later.
Spin close around rocky outcrops for best results later on in the day in the day and use smaller lures like Celtas or Gillies Spinners or the Vibes around the shallow bays after dark. Don’t stay in one place too long and only put in a couple of casts in each area.
Tasmanian Devils are catching fish in the deeper water by casting and waiting for the lure to sink a little before a slow retrieve. Cast as far out as you can but best results will be when the water is choppy with a little wind. Yellow wing Tassies are again doing best on the sunny days.
Anglers are still having good success using blades that resemble the goldfish we have in the lake.
Some of the better blades are TT Switchblade ‘Golden Boy’, Strike Pro Cyber Vibe 35 BLG and Cyber Vibe 50JU009. (note the goldfish usually bread at this time of year and the trout love to eat the little ones)

River Spinning
Less water flowing now and so the fishing has improved quite a bit.
The Thredbo River is fishing great guns at the moment!
You can now fish floating Rapalas, Celtas and Mepps in the shallower runs.
Sinking minnows like Rapalas have still been best in the pools, where you can toss them in and let them sit a while before retrieving.
Soft plastics have also been worth a try and we are having some luck in the evenings using ‘poppers’ and we have so great little poppers in stock that are working a treat but stock is limited so you will have to call in to see the best lures. Same goes for the soft plastics, limited sock of the goodies so call in and we will show you what’s working.

Fly Fishing Lake
Most fish this past week have been caught using green and black Woolley Buggers and Williamson’s Goldfish and are well worth using at dawn and dusk. Mrs Simpson and olive numphs are also worth a try.
Fish the bays for best results. Not a lot of fish rising buy they were taking termite patterns last night and there are also some Christmas beetles on the surface.

Fly Fishing Rivers
Big improvement on the rivers and streams now that water levels have dropped.
Plenty of caddis about and various patterns are catching fish. Hoppers are about now and so are the Snow Flake Caddis.
Still worth fishing a dry fly and a nymph dropper early and dry fly during the evenings.
For the dry try a bigger caddis pattern or a stimulator and for the dropper a black nymph will catch a fish for you.

For visitors to the Snowy’s we have a full range of fishing tackle for hire at my shop and fishing tours are now available.
