Title: Wivenhoe Dam Fishing
Post by: Daveo on June 30, 2013, 11:19:20 AM
Myself and a couple of mate fished Wivenhoe Dam on Saturday leaving the boat ramp at 7.30am. 1 x Canoe and 2 kayaks. Fishing Captain logans inlet. I tolled straight across from the day area to the other side of Captain logans inlet and on the the way back to the 2 kayaks i snagged a 43 yellowbelly (my first). then we trolled towards the mouth of Captain logans inlet with the 2 kayaks mainly stopping and flicking soft plastics and deep diver lures. Towards the mouth on the left hand side they stopped and picked up 1 x yellowbelly and 1 x 46cm bass, after that i trolled in the middle near Captain logans camping gound picking up another yellowbelly 40cm, the other boys kept flicking lures with no more luck. I mean while kept trolling back towards the public day area and picked up another 2 yellowbelly, both around the 40cm mark and 1 42cm bass. Very happy with the day's fishing.

Thanks for your comment, I was fishing between 9m and 12m of water using a black with silver strips baby bandit lure 5m depth. I also used a the same colour on the other rod, but 8m detph with no results.

Well done, and thanks sharing. It used to be rare for us to catch yellowbelly, but lately we have caught more of them than bass. Must be the muddy water. Have heard of a guy catching a dozen just fishing from the bank near the boat ramp at Somerset. Looks like fun times until the water clears a bit more.

Yellowbelly are cheaper than bass to buy, hence more bang for your buck. Also last season bass fingerlings were in short supply and more yellas were stocked in their place. Yellowbelly also grow quicker than bass. Since the big spill of 2011 , it makes sense that the Yellowbelly would bounce back quicker than the bass.

Cheers,
Dave.
