Recent Stocking of the River Leven

The Inland Fisheries Service stocked the River Leven on Wednesday 16 March with 5,000 wild stock rainbow trout fingerling with an average weight of approximately 7 g. This is the third stocking of 5,000 rainbow trout fingerling in the Leven over the past three years with the aim of boosting the wild rainbow river fishery.

The juvenie fish were grown at the Service's New Norfolk hatchery from wild rainbow trout in Great Lake. They were released into headwaters about 10 km upstream of Loongana.

The River Leven is one of the few large rivers in Tasmania that has not been dammed for irrigation or hydro development. The Loongana and Gunns Plains stream sections are rated highly for trout fishing, while the estuarine section is renowned for its sea run trout, and the river is ranked as one of the finest in the North West region.

The upstream section of river from the end of Lowana Road (Grid Ref E416578 N5423533) to the Loongana Bridge (Grid Ref E416218 N5416099) is managed as a rainbow trout fishery, being open from the Saturday nearest to 1st October until the Sunday nearest to the 31st May each year. The rest of the river is open in line with the brown trout season, from the first Saturday in August to the Sunday nearest to 30th April, except for the lower section downstream of the Allison Bridge which is open all year round for trout fishing.
