Fisheries blitz shows most Murray River anglers complying with rules NSW Fisheries 23 Mar 2012

A recreational fishing compliance blitz along the Murray River has shown that around 90% of anglers are doing the right thing by complying with NSW fishing regulations.

NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) Fisheries Compliance Director, Glenn Tritton, said a four day operation was conducted in March to coincide with the Victorian Labour Day long weekend.

“Areas targeted included Lake Mulwala and the Murray River from Corowa to Yarrawonga, Barham to Swan Hill and the Murrumbidgee junction to Mildura,” Mr Tritton said.

“Four teams, including fisheries officers funded from the Recreational Fishing Trust, spoke to 486 fishers and issued 39 penalty notices and 16 written cautions.

“Offences included failing to hold and possess a recreational fishing licence, fishing in areas closed to all fishing, unattended lines, unlawful use of traps, using excess fishing lines, unmarked set fishing gear and prohibited size fish.

“Fisheries officers also conducted some black market inspections of restaurants during the operation at Mulwala, Corowa, Barooga and Tocumwal which resulted in two restaurants failing to comply with the marketing regulations.

“Overall, we were pleased that most anglers from both NSW and Victoria are doing the right thing when fishing in NSW waters.

“It is great to see so many fishers out enjoying their sport sustainably and safely.”

Mr Tritton said fisheries officers will continue to patrol waterways along the Murray River and other inland waterways to ensure that fishers comply with NSW regulations.

“Our dedicated team of fisheries officers will continue to target those robbing the community of a precious resource that is there for everybody to enjoy,” he said.

“I remind anglers to ensure their NSW fishing licence is current when fishing in the Murray River and other NSW waters and that they must always have their receipt in their immediate possession when fishing.

“Even if you are standing on the river bank in Victoria and fishing in the Murray, you need to comply with NSW regulations.”

More information on fishing rules and regulations, recreational fishing licence fees and how the fees are used is available from fisheries offices and at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries.
