Joining the trees to connect the Namoi River 29 Nov 2013
Local communities are being reminded funding is still available to assist landholders make on-farm improvements and help the Namoi River and its fish. NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI), Fisheries Conservation Manager, Milly Hobson encouraged the people to apply for the funding and become involved in the ‘Connecting riverine communities in the Namoi’ program.
“Funding is available for a range of on-ground works that will allow the local community to get their hands dirty, make improvements to their property and enhance the local environment,” Ms Hobson said.
“Activities that will be funded include native tree planting, fencing, control of woody weeds, establishment of off-stream stock watering points, and the planting of windbreaks and wildlife corridors that connect areas to the river, creeks and wetlands.
“The project has been going for more than 12 months and has already achieved some significant outcomes, with more than 350 hectares of work currently signed up to the program.
“The activities completed as part of this project will help protect and enhance the local environment, improving biodiversity and bringing more fish back to the Namoi, while also looking after our land for future generations.”
Applications are invited from landholders, community groups, local councils and fishing clubs adjacent to the Namoi River and associated tributaries along the 150 kilometre reach from Gunnedah to downstream of Narrabri.
“This program is vitally important to help protect, restore and rebuild the local environment for the benefit of native fish,” Ms Hobson said.
The ‘Connecting riverine communities in the Namoi’ project is supported through funding from the Australian Government’s Clean Energy Future Biodiversity Fund.
