Map of the old Brisbane river through Wivenhoe
« on: May 29, 2013, 05:50:08 AM »
Hey Guys,

I've been trying to hunt down a map of the old Brisbane River section that is now under water through Wivenhoe Dam but to no avail. Does anyone know where I may be able to find one? Ideally, I'd like to have one "over-layed" on a current map of the dam. This would make it easier to get a rough idea of where the old river bed runs rather than spending countless hours sounding it out on such a big body of water.

Any help appreciated.

Try google earth, see if it has an image of the dam from around 2006, (When it was down to under 20%) that should show a lot of the old river bed, I saved a series of images from Somerset from around the same period. Otherwise just hunt up an old road map.

Otherwise I do have some old BSB map files, esk, nanango and caboolture maps, which have somerset, but not wivanhoe dam on them on them (IE shows the river bed from somerset down). I think they are 1:100,000

I use them in ozi explorer and have the key files for them. I dont know what other software opens them.

Thanks Binder,
I have noticed that Google Maps shows a bit of the river bed when you zoom out enough. Must revert to imagery from around the 2006 period like you said. I'd like to get hold of something more comprehensive though. I'll keep looking...

So, rather that put in the hard yards like everyone else has to find the river bed, you want more people to tell you how to go straight to it?

So Basser, who's the clever one then?? It's called using all available resources. The knowledge of many sweetwater members (such as yourself) is invaluable. Why wouldn't I call upon it?

On my only run so far with a sound at the dam I found it very interesting. Was not as deep coming out of Logans as I expected, with a very barren looking bottom (although I did manage to find the 1 tree the entire area and promptly snagged up on it lol, must have grown during the drought years).

Was the dam cleared when it was made? It's very different to Somerset which I'm used to, the depth there can be astonishing at times and there are usually hidden nasties on the bottom to snag you up. Wivenhoe certainly looked different on the sounder.

I'm actually looking forward to sussing out the dam and learning it's tricks and spots. Saw some beautiful arches on the sound, there's some good fish there, just have to tempt them now, bring on winter!

Not looking for the old river bed to fish in it, but rather simply to know where the flats are just on the edges of it

Muz, I was working on the damsite for about six months driving a water cart, The big trees were all felled as close as the chainsaws allowed across the entire basin. The regrowth was chain dragged a few times, before it filled, but they did miss a few spots. That AFN map the Dale posted is pretty close as he says.

Beetle, try Sunmap to see it they have an old cadastral map, or maybe the Qld State Library.

Well

here is a tip for you so you will never have to ask again

Download Google Earth.

Go to your chosen site or area.

Now up on the tool bar thing, change the date. In this case go to march 2008. Everything you are going to ever need.

Btw, the flats are big,

Tip 2, you will be a fair way from the edge.

Happy fishing.

PS, I thank you for the thank you.  ;)

even throw one of these in for ya
