Cod rods

When you throw a heavy spinnerbait for Cod, a rod that will load up correctly is essential. So I'd like a few opinions on what rating most of the Cod fisho's on here use.

I just use the barra rods on my shelf.
Type of rod doesn't matter after about 2 days of casting cod lures, you cant see it anyway coz of the tears in your eyes and you dont care about much more than the ache in your arms

Yeh mate, I think that about sums it up. BTW Steve, I should have realised mate that you have nothing to prove, particularly after fishing in winter with the cast of Fishbrain Productions.

The real name of the rod Steve is referring to is the Gladiator Cape Yorker.  Great for a Kayak/Canoe rod, but I wouldn't recommend it for normal boat work.  I prefer an Egrell B8-5 or B6-5, but any 6 to 8 kg shortish baitcaster will do.  Nothing will be strong enough to handle some of the 2oz Spinnerbaits that are out there, you'll have to do some pretty gently casting with them.  The old Loomis 665 was a pretty popular rod down south too.

not a boat rod really and yep those BIG spinner baits would have to be real hard work and rod selection would need to be pretty good.

When I come to think about it I recon I would go and buy a glass job over a graphite one cause both are going to struggle with the weight and gently gently would be the order of the day when casting.

Then again, if the water is that deep then I would look at something else besides a spinner bait. Some may know what I am taking about and others will be thinking "what drugs he on?"

For kayak work, (as well as the Cape Yorker mentioned above) I've got a little ugly stick spin rod which I run upside down with the baitcaster on it. Works a treat.

If I want uber accurate casting I pull out the Power Slim. These are a collectors item nowadays but I've never held a better rod for accuracy bar none so it's hard to retire it. But the 1-2kg is light on for heavy spinnerbait work, it's back to "lob shots" if the rod is over loading.

funny you should say that Gordon, I just bought one of those and tried it out in the Murrumbidgee last week. Works really well, and you can use it on Barra too.

I just looked back at this post Fitzy, and it reminded me of my most used Cod outfit. Nothing expensive at all, just a Daiwa Strikeforce on a Daiwa pistol grip rod. It puts lures wherever I want them all day. Mind you the reel is starting to show its age, but if your yak or tinny goes tits up in a river you're not going to be too far out of pocket.
