Why do you think that?
Went for a run with Seqwater rangers on boat yesterday and there only 13 boats on the lake all day. Was a lot of water between them... 6 knots seemed very slow, took an hour at 6knots to go from Hamon Cove to the water intake tower at Paddy Gully, that's where most headed. Doubt many kayakers would even attempt it.
FYI - rangers reckon its 8 hours return at 6knots from Hamon Cove to O Sheas Crossing and back.

I will say this its pretty cool to be able to go further in search of virgin bass grounds but to those who don't know the word etiquette look it up!
There I am on Sunday not a boat in site flicking a TN60 when here comes putting along two dudes trolling three rods out the back. You'd think they would give me a wide birth but nooooo they troll within a three metres of me and the proceed to get snagged and they completely stuffed my session/spot!
The dam is a biiiiiiiiig place just because there is a boat in sight why aim for it and stuff someone's spot?
Maybe it's best to stay on the yaks?

I'm sorry, but I think whilst it's great the dam has been opened to more users, there are such better ways of doing it. I know it's probably a case of baby steps, but the plan they have put in place is barely better than what we had. Just my opinion.

The plan is a very good compromise. It acknowledges that Lake Wivenhoe is a premier fishing destination and it appeases the concerns of the adjoining land holders. It allows for sharing between paddle wind and powered craft without having the users clash with each other. Speaking to a couple of local boat shops today, without them having my name they asked if I was going to Wivenhoe when I enquired about prices of 5hp 4 strokes. There must have been a lot of enquiries.

It seems there are more unhappy than those who are pleased by this move. Or many it's just a case of human nature that people tend to be most vocal only when they don't like something.... ::)

More able to travel afar in motor boats, good. However small boats further away from the launching spot spells trouble when Wivenhoe whips up some swells from strong winds. I'd hate to be 5 hours away from the ramp in a small dinghy with a 5 on the back, it might be a bit scary for Mum dad and the kids.
Worth thinking about? Are you allowed to break the rules when conditions are bad? So you can open up the 250 on back to get out of trouble?

What would I suggest? Divide the dam in half - one half for non-petrol motorized craft (as it is now), and the other half for motorized vessels with a speed limit of more than 6 knots, just to get around a bit quicker, but still no skiing, towing etc. Naturally this would mean constructing a few more launch sites. In the middle, have a "green zone", where no craft of any kind are allowed - kind of a sanctuary for fish/marine life. This will also ensure that the motorized and non-motorized groups are totally out each other's way and happy. Separate the areas with buoys and signage, and rangers could patrol this I'm sure.
And can someone explain to me how my late 80's model 8hp Suzuki, which is immaculately maintained and runs beautifully, is going to pollute the water more than the ski boats at Somerset and Atkinson are?
And Sweetwater, as I said, I'm happy that these changes have been made - it's a great step in the direction. It's just that I for one think more could have been done. Please dont think I'm one one of these people who only speak up when they don't like something. I live next to Wivenhoe, I had my say in the survey and I'm passionate about the place. I simply wanted to voice my opinion again on this forum to other people who are equally as passionate.

Awoonga used to be split with one arm for skiers and one for fishing. The skiers always wanted to ski in the fishing area and the fishermen wanted to fish in the skiing area.
Nativeman, the same danger applies in Canoes and Kayaks. Think back to a couple of years ago when one person ignored the safety advice at the convention. I almost sank my 18 footer that day, so "opening up the 250" is not possible when it gets like that. Users are responsible for their own safety.

I have no problems with boats and the speed limits..I cannot understand why standard 2 strokes are not permitted. If it is on environmental grounds then I suggest the same should apply for Somerset..get rid of some of those marinised car engines in ski boats. it is the same water once Somerset is opened.

On the lure lovers forum someone said that there has been people in a tinny with W.O.T. and then another the same towing tubes around and an 18 footer on the plane.
I have just bought I boat to join the stinkers out there as I want to get up into the top of the dam..Hopefully its still open by the time I get up there and not closed down by these idiots breaking the law...
Any other people seen instances where the rules have been broken?

I haven't seen or heard of any others. Same as speeding on the roads, there are fines involved if caught. C:-)

Sorry Dale, Its a kayaking term, please don't take offence and I apologise if I did offend anyone, Kayak Fishers call people that fish in power boats, Stick boats. Its a general term in the sport. So as of tomorrow I will be a stick boater too.
