Brisbane River Report - Lowood to Fernvale.
« on: May 02, 2011, 11:43:00 PM »
Fished the Lowood to Twin Bridges (Fernvale) section of the Brisbane River this afternoon with Dale & Pam. Also took the young fella for his first decent length paddle while fishing.

Dale & Pam accounted for a couple of nice bass while I hovered close to the lad while he came to grips with casting from the kayak. I also didn't want to see the Loomis/Daiwa combo get dropped overboard. The kid did pretty good only putting one spinnerbait up a tree and putting in some casts that deserved fish. He also did the distance pretty well, tho I did tow him for about 1km to give his sore arms a rest.

The river is cleaning up nicely, still not back to its normal color but definately fishable. There's some new fishy looking snags in this section and some old productive spots now cleared of structure.... it's like fishing a new river.

Saw a couple of fellas taking a young fella fishing in a tinnie. They were using prawns & worms for bait which the powertails were taking as quick as they were offered.

I didn't take any pics of the fish unfortunately.

A nice arvo on the water.  :thumbsup

Cheers,

fitz..

Good stuff Fitz

You know what the little fella will be talking about at school today thats for sure.

Been wanting to get that part of the river to have a look see after the flow.

Will get there soon I hope.

Pleasant day for a paddle.  At mid 30's the fish weren't huge, but compared to what we got at Clarrie Hall on Friday and Saturday, they were monsters.

Nice stuff guys

I went up from Kholo on Sunday morning and since I had never been fishing in the BR before enjoyed the first dig.  I was surprised the water clarity was so good there.  Compared to the water further down at colleges on the drive by on my way home it was great.  The flow was faster than I expected too.  The fishing was not what I had hoped for though.  I had wanted to see if I could break the PB since there are some great fish kicking around in there of late.  Only got three rats and a very small cattie.  Was only a very short 2 1/2 session though

What can you do but try again I suppose.

Cheers

Sounds familiar. Spent Sunday morning just down from the old Mt Crosby weir. Just off the bank. Nothing but snags and 2 catties about 5 inchs long. Saw a decent Bream (about 35 - 40cm) but was busy untangling a snag at the time. Plenty of bites, just nothing was being taken. Also 3 - 4 dead fish in the water, not sure what was going on there. Nice size too. Pity to see such nice fish go to waste.

I called into Chalton's Fishing at Redbank this morning & their spinnerbait wall has been "decimated". This is all driven by the Turket Shoot in the Brisbane River system. Good to see the flood gave such a good injection of lake fish to the river; biggest restocking since the summer of 99/2000.
Tri reports that the fishing around Mt Crosby has slowed a little in the last week, mainly due to the high numbers of anglers fitting the lower section over the Easter holiday period.

A mate at Moggill reported that good bass are still getting caught in the Venus Pool & Johnson Rocks area...a little harder to get to but for those with a kayak/canoe or a small tinnie can easy get up there from Kookaburra Park.

Not long until bass closed season so make the most of it while it lasts, the river will be a differnt story come spring & the season openning.

Have fun,

fitz..

Yeah , I found the same on the weekend too . It was alot quieter on Saturday arvo , had to work hard for 7 bass that wouldn't even make the rat category . Gave Sunday a miss but fished with the wife on Monday arvo , again very quiet compared to the previous weeks efforts with myself only narrowly missing a donut and the wife scoring 6 .

This afternoon , I launched at 4pm and had a great 1.5 hours in the river . Landed 11 bass , 3 line failures ( my braid is getting old and brittle , time to change it ) and a powertail. All on 3/8 size spinnerbaits, gold in colour  , allowed to sink to the bottom on a slow retrieve .

Cheers,
Dave.

Hey Novice are they sitting in the snags mostly or are they roaming around in the banks and in deeper water  ?

Using spinnerbaits , been getting them everywhere , even out in the middle of the river . When the water is dirty , blades 1/4oz cast as far as possible , just mix up the retrieve style .

Yeah its funny cause I have caught some of my best Bass not off the very fishy looking snag or overhang but rather 10 meters away that has nothing that gives it away as being fishy at all.

Cheers  mate

hey, went from twin bridges up to what I think was lowood bend both saturday on my own and on sunday(the day before fitzy went) with my girl.. Got five bass 30-34 saturday and my girl got 2 bass noticably smaller(so i say) and one catfish on sunday with me getting zip. We didn't fish in prime time it was like 9am-2pm there abouts, but I was happy with the results... It feels like I've almost caught a bass in wivenhoe now..

It was a ghost town out on the Brisbane river this arvo ( no other fishos )  , except for the pelicans and some very nice Bass . Got a surprise Yella too .

The 58cm was a pb for me. Got 11 bass and the yella in total , and no catfish for 2 hours work . They taxed me 2 spinnerbaits though , the biguns know where the snags are .

Cheers,
Dave.
