Title: Lake MacDonald need some advice please
Post by: aus_bass on January 12, 2011, 10:16:28 PM
Hi there,
Hoping to fish Lake MacDonald soon (when the flooding issue settles down) and was wondering how one fishes this waterway? It seems a lot like Clarrie Hall on Google Earth, ie surface fishing but cant trust that!

Thanks in advance  :thumbsup

It is a little, but a much smaller and shallower dam. Deepest part is not much more than 30 foot deep.

Loads of Toga, bass has been hit and miss since the first big fish kill when it overtopped a couple of years ago. Fish are still there, but its not the same dam anymore. It had a reputation for monster bass, now its average size at best.

I either fish the old creek bed east of the bubbler, or the bubbler itself, thats generally where I have been most successful with bass. I've fished the lilies a lot, for some success, but not usually on surface lures.

Some big toga in there, and stalking them on the yak can be both fun and frustrating (A Lot of lilies in the top!

Dont know what the lily pads will be like after all the rain, might have cleared them out a little.

Yeh mate... around the bubbler is a good place to start. I usually start by trolling over there, seeing and speeding around isnt a possibility. Tilson bass is a definate good trolling lure. colour just depends on the day... smallish stump jumpers go well too.

Ive found blades in dark colors with either silver and gold good for fishing around the bubblers. 1/4 is probably the easiest to work with there.

Have never really tried surface there, or had a look from a toga. Every time i fish the edges/weed beds i quickly change to tn60s. seems to be the most successful.

Just a word to note... after any kind of rain... especially flood rain. the current dislodges lots of weed and it can get very frustrating with the weed fouling your lures ALL THE TIME!

Havent found any monsters in there for a while now.

But they'll be there somewhere

James

I've fished this dam a couple times from a kayak and find it to be very frustrating. When I saw where the ABT yak events were to be held I thought gee they picked the two tuffest dams I have found to catch bass.

The only place I have caught bass in the dam is at the bubbler and that numbered two, 1 each time. Both times it was after huge spills from the dam. This dam has overflowed that many times in recent years I doubt whether there are many bass left in there...

Don't know if I will drive up there for the comp yet...

Cheers

Hi mate

I fish the dam alot and do well casting TN50 and 60 at the weed beds all over the dam, biggest i have seen over the last few months has been 43cms. I have tried top water several times with no luck at all. I have also been doing well on mini coop spinner baits as they mover through the weed very well.

Not sure how the dam will fish after the recent rain and i belive it spilled quite heavily, fingures crossed it well be ok.

Hope this helps

Cheers Parky.

I think from memory the last ABT only saw a handful of bass caught and those were pretty average.
