$6.8M Construction commences at Old Man Creek
State Water Corp

Construction on the upgrade of Beavers Creek weir on Old Man Creek (OMC) is progressing well with the first stage of the installation of the sheetpiles for the fishway nearing completion.

The upgrade is part of the Murrumbidgee Computer Aided River Management project (CARM), a $65 million world-class infrastructure development and enhancement project that maximises the use of the Murrumbidgee River system.

The first stage of the $6.8 million dollar project is the specialised installation of the sheet piles, which form the 39 cell structure for the fishway. The fishway will enhance the migration of native fish from Yanco Weir up river to the dams.

The second stage of the project will involve constructing the new weir within the by-pass channel, which will allow for the existing weir to be upgraded for better regulated water flow.

State Water Project Manager, Mano Manorathan said the infrastructure improvements will better control flows into Old Man Creek from the Murrumbidgee River.

“The OMC project will bring great benefits to the Murrumbidgee - better efficiency of water supply to irrigators, more effective delivery of regulated flows, a new fishway for native species migrating up-river, a reduction in scouring of the creek bed and better management of debris along the creek”.

“We are really pleased to see the progress on the project, on budget and with continued focus on safety and the environment,” said Mano Manorathan.

“Although construction has been delayed slightly, due to the adverse weather, we are progressing well with the installation of the sheet piles, considering it is such a specialist
area.”

Project contractors, Haslin Pty Ltd are approximately 30 percent of the way through the construction.

State Water Senior Communication Officer, Joanna Linehan said communication with local landholders has been a priority on the upgrade.

“Community information sessions, face-to-face meetings and numerous project updates have been provided to local landholders to ensure they have a full understanding on the project and have the opportunity to raise any issues or concerns.”
