can I launch there and sort of sneak over to the hydro area, and maybe  further south as the river bed as it snakes around to commerant.

There would be an exclusion zone around the hydro station as in the past. Essentially the access point is there to provide a shorter route around Harris Point to the buoy line  / Platypus Cliff area.

Do I need to send in the forms or bring them along. Which is best for you.

G'Day John,

Please post or scan & email them. I need the insurance info sooner rather than later & the sooner I can get everyone's forms in I can load them into the database.... less work to do in the final days before, or worse yet during the event itself.

Thanks,

Fitz..

There was a bloke who looks a bit like you tried that the first year we had access there.  I hunted him out a couple of times.  Next time I'll just disqualify him, which would look pretty bad, but would appease the Water Board a little.

Yeah I know the bloke and the bloke in that fizz boat looked a bit like you but with long black hair.

I just want to fish the "other" bouy line, can ya just turn a blind eye basser, even maybe give me a tow over there and have a little cast or two with me.

Was talking to Lindsay from BLA today. The new OK Prowler Ultra 4.3 will be there for test paddles for anyone keen to look at this new kayak.

New Old Town Models

Camden - A new model coming is the Old Town Camden. Unfortunately new stock might not make it to Oz before the Convention... I happen to have the only one in captivity in Oz so mine will be there for anyone to look at / test paddle.

Vapor - And, the Old Town Vapour will be in Oz in the coming months, if anyone wants a look at one, ask Basser as he's got the only one of these in Oz, recon he might have it there as well.

Saranac (stanard / XT) - will be there for test paddle.

Cheers,

Fitz..

Was 15 sites left at Captain Logan Camp as of last Saturday when I went out to the site for a look.

I've booked a couple of sites for S&WFSA members 18 - 20 (I think)

Still plenty of site at Lumley Hill (pensioner point) but all powered van sites are taken at Lumley.

If by some freak all sites get taken, we will sort something out with SEQWater.  :youbeauty

Instead of turning left into Logan's Inlet, you go straight ahead to the end of the road.  It's the point just out from the wall.

Pictures from Lindemans Road at Lowood.

Single lane dozed track down to river
Can turn around at bottom using about a 5 point turn.
Can get very close to water, over a couple of logs to water. Not too dificult.
Could get down in 2x4 vehicle if it hasn't rained.

It is off Lindemanns Road behind the small industrial estate at Lowood. Look for the concrete /power radio pole in industrial estate, track is opposite it.

This hole goes from Lowood Bend upto the Log Jam adjascent to Harpeng Road.
Title: Re: Shines Road
Post by: Sweetwater on September 03, 2011, 09:12:53 PM
Pictures from Shines Road, Wivenhoe Pocket

Go to end of Shines Road, look for track on right at end of road, follow to gate.
Steep track down to river, approx 60m - 80m from gate to river depending on where you launch from (left at bottow or right)

Close gate behind you.

Approx 100m upstream to Lockyer Creek Junction. A couple of kilometers down to Harpeng Road & the Log Jam behind island.

WARNING. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PADDLE DOWNSTREAM WHERE RIVER DIVIDES AT ISLAND. PORTAGE AROUND VIA LEFT OF ISLAND. The log jam on the western side of island is now quite substantial since the flooding in January 2011. You cannot paddle through the log jam (even if you drink Solo)!!! You will get stuck or injured or worse!!
Where the left arm (going downstream) finishes adjascent to Harpeng Road, you will need to portage from end of hole along old river bed washout to bottom side of log jam, approx 50 - 60m.

Lowood Bend

You can drive any type of car down the dirt track to end up quite close to the river here.

There are three (3) sets of rocks here, you can launch just below the first set of rocks and easily portage around it on right hand side, or if you're a good paddler you might just paddle straight up. Or drive along track another 50m to launch below the bottom rocks.

Lowood Bend in a popular starting point for downstream trips to either Twin Bridges (approx 5-6km) or further on to Savages Crossing (approx 8 or 9km).

Bass are often found in and around these rocks and snags immediately below the fast water.

All pics below wer taken from where you can get a car to with ease.

Road Reserve #5175

Road reserve #5175 goes from Forrest Hill - Fernvale Road right down & across river to Vernor Road (road reserve) in Wivenhoe Pocket.

Look for yellow & black striped post at gate marking the road reserve.

Close gate behind you & don't disturb any cattle that may be in paddock.

This access point is not commonly used as few know of it's existance. Another reason is that it is only about 1km from the popular
Lowood Bend access point. This is another location that if not used, may be lost as a public access point for exactly that reason.

Road Reserve #5178

Look for gate on bend of road. Always close gate behind you as cattle are often grazed here.
Very rarely used as very few know this is a road reserve.

Vernor Road

Road Reserve to river.
Look for track opposite bitumen road section of Vernor Road

Fielding Road Reserve

Locked gate at end of bitumen. Can walk to river from gate, a distance of approx 200m. No camping. No vehicle access to river. Occasionally the gate is left unlocked & you can drive right down to river bank; if you have a 4x4 you can take track down to peninsula into river (aka Beaver's Reach or Beaver Stretch)

Tiwn Bridges

This is pick of all access points from Wivenhoe to the tidal water at Colleges Crossing.

Vehicles can be drive right to the waters edge here.

This location is the bottom end of the hole that begins at Lowood Bend (approx 5-6km upstream).

Downstream of the bridge is some faster flowing water for a couple hundred meters to the new Highway Bridge where a smaller hole extends down to the England Creek Junction.

4x4 vehicles can be driven on gravel / sand tracks from Twin Bridges along river to under highway bridge.

I can't make it for the Friday night briefing so what time do I have to be there on the Saturday?

6:00AM but  come and see me when you get there Wayne, will sort you out as soon as we can.

We will be handing out competitor cards friday night & having briefing / seminar then. Sat morning is the opening, weather report, grab your key & head off. Keeping it as short n sweet as possible sat am to allow more time on water. Nobody is allowed on water until after 6am so we will have the opening at 6am.

Also going to ask everyone to fill in a Daily Trip Plan out lining where you intend to go & ETA for return. These will go into a closed box & only opened if someone doesn't return on time, we know where to send Emergency Services.  :thumb

Cheers,

fitz..

Has launching at Figtree Lookout site been approved yet, because I'm wondering will this area  be protected from the Westerly predicted and save a hard paddle back for the ones fishing the dam.

Yes, confirmed by head ranger today. Entrants will be permitted to launch at Figtree Outlook, travel north/west along shoreline to access the permitted fishing area west of the buoyline. This the shortest route to the buoyline / platypus cliff area & doesn't require crossing open water.

The gate will be opened for ingress at the start of the session & unlocked at the end of the session. So if you go in there you will be locked in for the day. You can phone & ask for someone to open the gate & if someone is free they will come let you out.

Remember that essentially there are a few of us working for the weekend, resources are limited.....

Cheers,

Fitzy..

Thanks this be a great option if the wind does come up or people don't wish to paddle the long distance.
