Good evening
Today we went out to fernvale for lunch and bit of a country drive . Went out to attkinsons dam for a look . On way the back stopped in at cormorant bay . Cooling down in afternoon it was time to hit the water . Got 5 grunters and my pb perch . About 420mm . Its always a bonus when we get a good catch .

My new lure pack . Natural colours work best for me . Nearly caught a huge bass kayak fishing last week . The barred grunters were frozen overnight to make sure we didn,t let grunter eggs go in river . Cormorants bay is a great place to catch bait fish . Some times we get bony bream in bait trap .I was using a 15cm barred grunter on single hook . Must have been a huge bass to inhale that bait. Got it right beside kayak but he got away hook wasn't set. Might look at getting some circle / octopus hooks for big baits. After nearly landing that huge bass i put together this pack so i can use lures to imitate a barred grunter when i don't have baits from lake. I know theres a huge bass and he like s to eat grunters . I got 3 for tommorow . Then lures after there gone.

Were you land based for the grunters and yellowbelly?
I've been thinking of trying Cormorant Bay,as we've had no luck at Colleges.:-)

Land based mate. Some times we use surf rod to get the bait right out there . I think theres a deep chanel . Like the origonal brisbane river thats were all the big fish sit. You will see a rocky point down the hill from cafe cast to the right it looks deeper there . Theres a drop off rock shelf to deep water . Its nice area for perch standing timber and nice drop off s close to bank.

Hello Riverhunter,
I was reading your post about perch and other fish.
I've been over to Cormorant Baya few times, not fishing, just looking, looks like a good spot for garfish towards the dam wall more or less.
With regards to that rock cliff, Is there are track down there? I could not see a track last time, (about 6 years ago).
If I'd known there was a chance of catching a nice bass or two, I'd be over to try, probably buckleys chance catching one land based.
Would a 14ft surf rod be overkill from the bank?

The spot i was fishing from is just down hill from cafe u will see picnic tables and bbq areas down hill . There is rocky point with standing timber . 14 foot surf rod would be an advantage i would say . Helps you get bait out to deeper water.

Thanks for that info, what live or dead bait was you using at the time?
I'm wondering whether any bass are found in that area, one way to find out is when I get there.
The only problem I could think of for Cormorant Bay is gate opening and closing times, would like to get there around dawn.
Size 2 Kahl Wide Gap hook and size 2 ball sinker on the bottom, hook about 18" above bottom, would this be set up for the rig?

The king prawns from wollworths at fernvale . Big bait = big catch . I don't think your aloud to use live crayfish . So king prawn is close looking to a big cray fish . Ive been reading the nippers are good baits /saltwater yabies . Live shrimp would be prime if you can get them.

King prawns, I'd would never have thought of that one. Should they be shelled or as is?
Live shrimp would be good, I reckon the traps will need to be left overnight somewhere to catch shrimps. Not all places have shrimp populations for reasons unknown, whether lack of vegetation or other, (apart from fish eating them).
There are a few places I could place shrimp traps, but whether they will be stolen by unscrupulous people is another thing.
I've got the itch to try, sometime next week I'll be doing that, also try for garfish, hopefully the winds will be kind on that day.

Leave the shell on whole prawn take some gamakatsu hooks some times i just run the ball sinker right on hook. Or no sinker at all theres some 1 metre catfish around there i reccon great sport fish our pb is 57cm power tail catty. 45cm eeltail catty and 42cm perch . My goal is to catch 60cm perch or bass. A fish that size would take 15cm grunter rigged on gamakatsu livebait hook easy .

Gamakatsu hook, ok, any particular type and size?
I've got some Gamakatsu hooks, size 6 Octopus circle, might be too big.

Thanks heres some hooks i use gamakatsu 1/0 octopus circle hooks . And the one on right can't rember size but you wouldn't need much bigger than that for 10-15 cm baitfish/ or big baits like king prawns. Im plaining on going out on Friday afternoon .

Much appreciate the hook size, I use to have a variety of Gamakatsu hooks for deep sea trips, ended up losing a few over time, never got around to replacing them until recently.
Thursday next week would be the earliest I can go and give cormorant bay a go.

We went out to lake today fishing at same spot . Caught two grunters on small rod not much action today but was beautiful day . Just good to relax at lake with family . Done a bit off scouting walked the bank to the right it was like a goat track very steep rock cliff . Found a nice spot around corner . Im sure you could catch perch on jackall tn60 or kokoda g vibe around there . Looks like prime area .

Oh well, that's fishing, yep sure is a good day to be out on the water. I'd say that spot you was in would have been sheltered from the NE winds.
I don't normally use lures but have been looking into them recently,
What colour with those lures would be the go for that area.

Ayu is my favourite colour vibe . I like the natural colours my friend caught a huge perch on matt black kokoda vibe in a part of dam on way the to somerset. I heard blue and purple are good colours . I guess its all a personal preference . What colour you like . Try the kokoda gvibe lure white , matt black and ayu . they are about $7.50 for kokoda gvibe ask them at bcf for ayu thats the best one i reccon.

There is a nice set of soft vibes on ebay $29 or so . They are very popular type of lure .
