Code finally cracked
« on: December 09, 2010, 08:47:43 AM »

Last night on the telly, news finally broke that the lads at Narrandra led by Dr Dean Gilligan had finally had success  breeding  Macquarie perch in capitivity . It was done in the way of an artificial stream  , brood stock introduced , Time passed then cigars all round . So far  the small fry looked to be about 10 to 15 mm long , a good start indeed
Lets hope in the coming years this fantastic sportfish will make a big return

Regards

Pete

Welcome news Pete.  It would be great to see an intensive stocking program of Maccas into their original waters.  If they have truely cracked it, a program similar to the Trout Cod releases in the Ovens River may be a good idea in the King, Kiewa, Mitta and others in Victoria.

Never got one of them but I hear they are good sport.

Like wise I hope the guys up at the Bribie Research centre can get the funding first and then figure out how to get JP hatchings to eat.  Getting them out of the egg is only half the battle but with hard work and clever thinking as shown with the MP's it can be done.

Cheers Geoff
