By Steve Williamson. – Lake Jindabyne Trout Fishing Adventures. Shop -02 64561551

NEWS –
The Rapala / Discovery Holiday Parks Family Fishing Competition is on this coming weekend.
Entry can be made by calling us on 02 64561551. Remember after booking you still must register that you have
arrived, so we know you are fishing. You need to still sign waivers and collect entry bag. Registration can be made
up until 8pm on Friday 25th with the competition starting at first light on Saturday 26th and finishing at 11am on
Sunday 27th with presentation at 1pm on Sunday. Dinner tickets for non-competitors are available.
Help us out by booking early as due to the fact this is a public holiday weekend we need to shop for the catering on
the Thursday, so unless you only want half a sausage I would get your booking in ASAP.

FISHING NEWS.
The cooler nights has the water temperatures a lot lower this week, especially with our first big frost for the season on
Monday. The trout are now starting to think about the spawning season ahead and so they can be a little moody, which is
very normal for this time of the year. You will notice from our Facebook page that there are some excellent rainbow trout
caught over the last week and the first of the really big brown trout are starting to be seen in the Thredbo River and a
couple of big fish caught on the lake. Some reports now that really big Rapalas are now starting to catch some big trout
on the lake.
The shore based angling has been good but you have to really think about where and how you fish, al lot is very
dependent on the day and how bright it is.
I think we really need a big weather change to really get the fish stirred into action so we will wait and see but if you
don’t get a line on the water you’re going to miss out.
One thing I have noticed over the past week, the trout can come on the bite even in the middle of the day.

LAKE LEVEL and TEMPERATURE

The lake level had a slight rise still due to recent rain.
The Lake temperature today was 15 to 16 degrees C on the surface and will start to drop slowly now.
The weather this next week with see temperatures ranging from about 4 degrees to about 18 degrees.
Best methods to catch a trout. – Not a lot of change yet!
Best method – Surface fishing has improved and lead core lines at 3 colours early in the day. Browns comning in
on the downriggers at anything between 25 to 45 feet.
Best lake lure – Orange and black has started working and possibly we might see pink lures as well soon.
Best lake area – Deep drop-offs and even open water for the lake trollers.
Best fly method lake – Williamson’s Goldfish (Plenty being caught in yabby nets so they are about)
Best River Fly Fishing– Adams (small) and Red Tag are reported to be working well and Crickets about now.
Best River Lures – Small spinners into the faster runs or a 5cm CD Rapala spotted dog.
Let’s have a look at what the fishing is going to be like over the next week.

Trolling.
Start the morning off with a surface line and one line with 3 colours of lead core line. After the first hour of
light your best with leadlines. In the middle of the day we have been using downriggers and still catching the
odd fish at 25 to 45 feet but fish have spread out more now so you just need to plug away. Look for the daphnia
clouds which are hard to find but the trout are there when you do find them.
The Tasmanian Devil number 111 “Willy’s Special’ or my Black/ Orange are still about the best Tasmanian
Devil colours at the moment followed by the yellowing brown bomber. Best Rapala colours are rainbow trout
and brown trout at the moment. With water levels still high, some of the better trolling areas this month will be
Hatchery Bay and Hayshed Bay and Sid’s Bay through to Rushes Bay however watch the rocks as the East
Jindabyne Islands start to reappear as the water levels drop.
Yes we do hire leadlines and downriggers!

Lake Bait Fishing
(Primarily most rivers and streams in the Snowy Mountains Region are fly and lure only, We recommend that you
first check with the Department of Industry and Investment NSW (NSW Fishing rules) as to which rivers in the
area you can legally bait fish in. IF IN DOUBT DON’T BAIT FISH in the RIVERS!)
Worms under a float or fished of the bottom with an artificial bait dropper is the best way to catch a trout at the
moment. Best bait fishing areas are Creel Bay, Hatchery Bay and Curiosity Rocks. Another great area is the
bottom of Discovery Holiday Park near Widows Creek Inlet.

Lake Spinning
The early morning is your best bet to catch a trout with the best lures using small 7 gram Tassie devils or flicking floating Spotted Dog Rapalas and most lures that look like goldfish.
Best areas have been down at the South Arm, Hatchery Bay or near Banjo Patterson Park.

River Spinning.
Small Rapalas in the floating variety with the best colours being rainbow trout and spotted dog. Small bladed spinners, like the Gillies Feathertails or Celtas in numbers one or two sizes will be also worth a try. For deeper water the Rapala CD5 Spotted Dog or Gillies Tailbender. Best fishing are coming from the faster runs if you can get a lure deep enough. Don’t discount very big Rapalas at this time of your working them through the deeper pools.

Fly Fishing Lake

Try any of the streamer patterns such as Mrs Simpson and Williamson’s Snowy Mountains Gold Fish. Olive green nymphs and shrimp patterns are also worth a try.
You may get an evening rise after a sunny day but to date they have been few and far between on the lake.
The South Arm, Creel Bay and Kangaroo Bay (if you have a boat) are all great for fishing at the moment.

Fly fishing Rivers and Streams
The Alpine streams are getting a little slower but still worth a try.
Flies you must have are brown beetle patterns, Snowy Hopper, Stimulator, Royal Wulff and Parachute hoppers. Maybe a brown and a black nymph if the fish are not rising and a white moth or white Wulff
And maybe you had better throw a midge pattern, brown mayfly and an Adams in as well to make certain you have most circumstances covered.
For visitors to the Snowy’s we have a full range of fishing tackle for hire at my shop and fishing tours are now available.
