Recreational fishers in the northern Riverina will benefit from the release of over 10,000 golden perch into Lake Centenary in Temora and Lake Albert in Wagga Wagga.

Industry & Investment NSW (I&I NSW) Narrandera Fisheries Centre Hatchery Manager, Matthew McLellan, said the fish stocks would boost fish numbers and recreational fishing across the region.

“Staff at the NSW Government’s Narrandera Fisheries Centre have been busy producing golden perch to release into Lake Centenary and Lake Albert,” Mr McLellan said.

“The release into Lake Centenary will rejuvenate the fish population following a blackwater event earlier in the year.

“The water quality at Lake Centenary has improved following this blackwater event and conditions are now right to release the fish.”

Mr McLellan said Lake Albert has received over 40,000 fingerlings over the last twelve months to boost fish numbers following the drought.

“After many years of low water levels, fish populations in Lake Albert are showing good signs of recovery,” he said.

“The NSW Government’s fish stocking program has released 10,000 Murray cod, 20,000 golden perch and 10,000 silver perch into Lake Albert since December 2010 which has replenished fish numbers following the drought.

“Local fishers are reporting good catches in the lake and this latest release of golden perch is more good news for anglers heading out for a day’s fishing.”

Mr McLellan said the fish stocking program is supported by money raised from the NSW Recreational Fishing Fee, and aims to enhance recreational fishing opportunities for the State’s fishers.

“These fish have been bred and released exclusively for recreational anglers from money raised from the sale of recreational fishing licences.”
