SunWater has recently completed a $19.2 million upgrade of Kinchant Dam, west of Mackay, as part of an ongoing Dam Safety Upgrade Program.

The program is aimed at ensuring dams continue to be able to hold and safely release excess volumes of water during periods of extreme rainfall.

SunWater General Manager Bulk Water & Irrigation Systems, Tom Vanderbyl said this was the fifth dam to be upgraded by SunWater as part of the government funded program.

"SunWater is undertaking a dam safety upgrade program to ensure the highest level of safety for our dams is maintained," Mr Vanderbyl said.

"Upgrade works commenced in August 2012 and were completed in several stages to minimise disruption to customers and the local community," he said.

"The safety upgrade included improvements to the existing drainage system within the dam wall structure, together with the installation of additional drainage within and downstream of the dam foundation."

SunWater’s Dam Safety Upgrade Program commenced in 2005. Since then, SunWater has completed safety upgrades to Fred Haigh Dam, Bjelke-Petersen Dam, Borumba Dam, Tinaroo Falls Dam and Kinchant Dam.
