Have your say on Queensland’s freshwater fishing review - Reminder

News release | 18-Dec-2014

Fishers, stocking groups and community members are urged to provide comments on proposed changes to Queensland’s Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS) following the release of the Freshwater Regulatory Impact Statement (the RIS).

Fisheries Queensland consultation manager Tony Ham said the proposed changes seek to further expand the successful SIPS scheme.

“SIPS is a highly successful scheme which helps to ensure the ongoing sustainability of fish in stocked waterways,” Mr Ham said.

“Most of the popular dams in Queensland are stocked each year with fingerlings and under the scheme, anglers pay a fee to fish at any of the 32 registered dams across Queensland.”

Mr Ham said the options outlined in the RIS have been developed in consultation with key stakeholders and they are now seeking wider community consideration.

”The scheme provides a range of economic, environmental and recreational benefits for the surrounding local communities,” he said.

“The RIS proposes changes to permit conditions and impoundment additions to the scheme.

“The proposed changes will allow the expansion of SIPS across the state and provide vital resources to allow our stock fisheries to grow and prosper.”

To have your say on the future of Queensland’s SIPS and freshwater management arrangements, download the Regulatory Impact Statement from https://publications.qld.gov.au/storage/f/2014-11-24T01%3A09%3A46.961Z/freshwater-ris-final.pdf or  www.daff.qld.gov.au and submit your feedback online.

Submissions close at 5pm, 27 January 2015. This date has been extended to allow more time for the public to have their say.
