Sunday morning with the family at Colleges Crossing.
« on: May 26, 2014, 08:06:54 AM »
Gidday all.Well,we finally managed an outing at Colleges yesterday morning.
Weather was beautiful,& we arrived,as planned,an hour before high tide,so we could fish each side of it.

Armed with new lures,& a bag of prawns defrosted an hour before,as well as some info on where to fish by the lads on here,I was quietly confident of a favorable result.

We headed the mentioned 20 mt to the left of the ramp,& started with a small sinker, and then about 40cm down to a swivel with the clip on the other side, which I attached a size 1 nickel hook with a prawn.

Bites every cast but took us about 30 mins for our first hook up,(which as luck would have it was the Mrs!)
We managed to catch 3 banded/barred grunters ranging from 15-20 cm and a 30cm cattie.
I think its a catfish.That or a threadie.in first pic?
We struggled to hook them although there were plenty there by the bites.
Any ideas guys? Hook too big for size of fish maybe. The ones we did catch were literally just hooked by the skin of their lip.
All in all,we had a heap of fun trying to catch em,& the reaction of my 8 yo catching his very first fish was pure gold and so heartwarming,it will stay with me forever.

Great to see you got onto some. Size of hook could be the problem, but I think I was actually using larger than size 1 hooks. Most of the ones I hooked at the point coming out almost near their eyes!

I generally just pick the hook size to suit the bait, but it's always worth trying some smaller, some larger to see what works, too small and they can easily get the bait off, too big and they can't fit it in their gobs hehe.

Great to see your family got onto them, awesome about your Son, that one will stay with you for a long time, and hopefully it's the start of a lifelong fishing career :)

Cheers Murray.
Now that you mention it,the two grunters I hooked did have the point coming out near their eye! Its either a size 1 or 1/0 I was using.not really up on the size thing.Have u had any luck with poppers, bats, minnows or spinners there? :youbeauty
