Lures with plastic (lexan) bibs
« on: December 11, 2011, 08:43:27 PM »
Was at the Lake Mulwala Cod Classic recently & was shown some video where a mate hooked a cod & a had the bib snap off on the lure which resulted in a lost fish.

The tow point of the lure was in the bib & there was no wire to strengthen it. If the lure had a wire support/strengthener from the tow point to the body the fish could have been landed even if the bib broke.

I for one would be disappointed to be fishing in cod water, with a cod lure only to have the bib snap off with the first fish the lure hooked.

Who else has had a similar scenario?

Yeah been there done that too, on big cod ~40lb, can't remember the name o f the lure - big mud bug thing Australian cottage made (McNeils or sumtin//) smaller versions make great bass lures - was really pissed off as I had just upgraded hooks to stainless, hadn't yet flattened barbs and was freaking that the cod wouldn't be able to dispose of it..came back a week later and caught the same fish - so it was cool - but never like depending on a lexan bib connection ever again!

I saw a few Killalures give out at Faust a few years ago.  Seemed a common thing then.  They weren't lexan bibs though they were moulded.

Just back from a Barra trip up north ! A mate made me some nice timber lures and they had metal bibs inplace like the
vintage ones years ago.   I reported to him that the lures were great but the metal bib bent under the power of large Barra mouths.

Then he commented that this is why the Cod fishermen used to like the metal bibs because they held the Cod by the bib and although it would bend they would not loose the fish as the lexan bibs snapped....just bend the bib back and keep fishing.

Not seen it, but always been worried by it. Wont toss a lure in Cod water that mounts on a plastic bib with no wire. Not so worried about barra, bibs tend to be stronger and shorter in the deep divers. (Less leverage for the fish).

I've seen polycarbonate bibs snapped on the strike by barra and cod, as well as fail at the bib to body connection after impact or on heavy gear. Lures with alloy bibs can still fail at the bib to body connection. Pinning alloy bibs or full wires on lures with polycarb bibs are my preference :thumbsup

Cheers
Wal
