First tagged bass ;)
« on: December 26, 2012, 07:41:55 PM »
G'day everyone, headed down to the Bremer today for a quick flick. It was a slow arvo, managing 3 bass, up to 46cm which was also tagged!
I lodged the info on Suntag, turns out he was captured in the Brisbane river at 43cm on 14/01/12. Released him ofcourse so hopefully somebody can capture him again in the future and see where he is at!
All the bass fell to a surface fizzer, which made them all that much better ;)  :youbeauty

3cm in 12 months for a bass that big, ? reckon the bloke who caught it originally might need to learn how to measure a fish !

Yep I thought it odd, what is a usual growth rate for that size fish mate?
it varies between fish, but usually around 20-25mm per year. i captured a tagged bass recently that was out for 6090days. it was apparently 345mm when tagged but i caught it at 420mm 16.5 years later. i am guessing he was no where near 345mm when tagged or each drop over a dam wall it smashed its nose a few cms shorter each drop lol  :)) or stressed it or injured it ..
nice bremer sesh by the way  :youbeauty

That growth is not unusual, Bass tend to do a spurt or 2 on the way from fingerling size to around 300mm (usually attaining that size in a couple of seasons in a river), then depending on where they reside the growth is gradual as you indicate at about 25mm a year.
Of course that will also depend on a good tucker box and whether the water currents are nice or nasty. If the waters got some flow and all there is to eat is gambusia, then growth wont be a fast as a slow pool full of boneys or shrimp.
More protein + less exercise = a shape more like Dales than Fitzy's  ;)

Sex is also a factor in growth rates, males grow slower and dont grow as big.
