fishing recomendations for a visitor to you fair shores
« on: March 24, 2013, 05:30:57 AM »
Hi

I am coming to Australia in April and am looking to do some camping/ fishing in NSW. Please can anyone offer me some recommendations. Anywhere within about 3hrs of Sydney would be great as I will be staying with friends there.

I am particularly interested in catching native species and I am happy to fish stillwaters or rivers, I am mostly a fly angler but will have bait and lure gear as well. Any advice on baits/flies/lures would also be gratefully received.

Many thanks
Phil

Phil,
I live a long way from Sydney these days but I grew up there and would suggest you try the upper Shoalhaven river for Bass, that's south of Sydney nearest town is Nowra. IF you want to chase a few trout there are plenty of small trout streams on the western side of the Blue Mountains. Nearest town there would be Lithgow. There's a big dam out that way too and you will get Yellow belly (golden Perch) there. You haven't mentioned where you will be staying but I would find a good tackle shop nearby and talk to them about it. (It helps if you buy some gear). North of Sydney is the Hunter River and there are bass in the freshwater reaches of that too.
I hope this helps,
John

Many Thanks John, I will surely check out your recommendations!

I am looking forward to wetting a line, especially as our spring is currently under a foot of snow! preventing any early season fishing here.

Cheers
Phil
