Title: PB Bass off the top !!
Post by: prof on December 06, 2012, 11:21:33 AM
Well I got up a sparrows fart this morning  to have a surface session at my local, after reading Nige's report on hot surface action in the river.

Even though it was a really low tide , there were heaps of herring smacking the surface and there was no wind so the water was glassy, perfect for some top water action.

My first fish after about ten minutes was small but gave a good account of itself by tangling me up in the weeds, being a low tide it was about 4 feet down a slippery muddy bank and only had the short net?? He was caught on a Taylor made cicada lure, goldie orange colour. He went 29cms.

After a few more lure changes I changed to a Tiny cicada in the clear yellow, a few well landed casts next to a good snag and was on again, this one a little bigger at 31cms.

Had a few more casts with the cicada for zilch,  so i thought it was time to break out the "Donguri mouse", started doing long casts down the bank on either side of me to try and tempt a strike from a few weed beds along the edge, after about 15 mins I think I annoyed one into having a strike and "boof" he was on, another solid bass falls prey to the "Donguri Mouse", this one was a little bigger again at 35cms.

After another 20 mins with no action and the tide had stopped running, I decided to move up stream, by the time I moved the tide had turned and started running back in, so I was hopeful of a few more before heading home.

I was at the new spot and I was about ten feet from the bank standing on this little muddy island in amongst the reeds, when I notice some movement to my left, I look over and see an almighty splash and boof from a decent sized bass, so after a few well placed casts near the area, and hopping then pausing the "Donguri mouse" , instead of a slow retrieve the bass came up and absolutely smashed the lure,  gave a good fight for about 3 mins or so , peeling line and me tightening the drag trying to keep her out of the weeds,  then suddenly thinking my net is ten feet away...hope the hooks hold??   Eventually got her to the shore and then the struggle across ten feet of muddy terrain praying that she would stay on the line.

Well I made it in one piece and put her on the mat.......51 cms... yaaahooooo a new PB and off the surface !!!!

Cheers :) :)
