With only days to go until the bass season opens in Qld, the batton gets handed to Murray Cod in all waters in NSW & Victoria waters (August 1 to December 31 in South Australia).
If you want to go chase a cod in NSW or Victoria, you need to do it before next weekend, or go to waterways in Qld that DON'T form part of the border with NSW.
Speaking with fisheries researchers this week, the male cod are already on the move looking for a mate, so it appears that the closed season is possibly timed a bit late.
Am hoping to go get some underwater footage in the coming weeks of cod spawning.
So who is going to have a last blast at the cod?

Hey Fitzy, I had my last blast last week over on the Dumaresq. I dropped into Glen Lyon on the way over and Brian showed me a 1,5metre Cod down on the dam wall preparing his nest. Aftyer that we went to our ca mpsite set up camp and got in some wood then went fishing. We got 2 nice Cod about 70cm in the first hour (just after 4.00pm and then nothing. After that we got another 3 over the next couple of days including one with a tag. but they were smaller fish. We got about 3 good surface hits but no hook ups. The hookups came on Bassman Spinnerbaits half ounce with a stinger hook and soft plastic tail, and one on a hard body.
I said goodbye to them all and see ya in December.

I would like to drive down this week, but I have been a very bad boy at home and I doubt I'd get a leave pass. looks like it is December for me too, unless I find a Qld Haunt.

Is the Condamine included in the cod closure too? The Barwon, Macintyre or Dumaresq rivers are listed as closed on the Dpi website and I'm still learning the regs for freshwater down this way.

The Condamine River is ok to fish year round for cod. Bag & size limits apply :thumb
