More tagged barra info- check out the '900km special'
« on: June 01, 2011, 06:53:58 AM »
In the middle of my blog report there is a paragraph on recent ( week or two) tagged barra recaptures. Just scroll down about half way until you find it. There are 3 recaptures with varied history. It's worth a read if you are interested in that sort of thing.

That was a good read Johnny, a 900 km journey is pretty incredible. I was talking to Sharpy at Gareths 50th & he said that you had sounded a lot of fish in the river recentley. Keep up the good work, next time I am up there I may have to organise a day with you.

Cheers Andrew

More great things from you again Johnny. It's reassuring to see great Barra still coming from the Boyne after so many negative comments. Have the pro's gott into them yet?
Cheers mate,
JD

JD,
The extra 60 day 'no netting' ban is about half complete, so there is another month until that initial period is up. The biggest mobs left the river a good while ago but a really good catchable bundle still exists among other scattered schools and singular fish. The river temp is around 67-68F give or take, depending. Barra are still being caught, but angler numbers are less.  I caught two good barra early one morning this week and had a cuppa with Ben, a local living on the river. He watched one jump the day before and I also witnessed a fish of about 120cm jump as it fed the same morning. The barra now in the sea are still doing what lake fish do- they haven't forgotten that programmed part. The commercial guys will most likely focus on other fisheries from here on in-offshore net fishery targeting queenfish, grey mackerel, school mackerel, shark and salmon. The target has moved and if the pro fishers do return I'd imagine it will be short lived. The barra are scattered and the big attraction of a ball of money barra in the Boyne isn't like it was 4-8 weeks ago. Time has done its intended thing.
Andrew,
Sharpy is a good fella with tonnes of fish nous. He could sniff any fish out from ten miles.
J
