Qld 14.7.11 Lake Macdonald
« on: July 14, 2011, 07:56:45 PM »
Arrived at the dam just after 7am,Eric aka Lantana had already loaded up and launched his yak and after a
quick hello (man how quick two months goes by) I was loaded and ready to go.
We started out working our way down the western side of the dam towards the wall and it was then I realised
the sounder wasnt firing up.We elected to troll around until hopefully striking fish then we would pull up and cast
and retrieve.
I headed off to the east while Eric headed back towards the bubblers in the centre of the main basin and it was soon
after he struck gold (or should I say yellow but Ill let Eric fill in the details if he wishes)
meanwhile I had turned south and crossed over to the southern shore and worked my way back west to meet up
without any success.the morning though cool was still and clear and it was one of those magic winter days that
makes fishing fun with just a light breeze ruffling the water.
It was past 8.30am and thinking that Sunstate Hobie would be open we headed in for a cuppa and to get the
sounder battery checked as it had only been recharged the day before.
After a half hour on the charger I took it back to the yak but still no joy so the sounder was packed in the car
to give me more room to use the fly rod if needed.
after a quick chat to a trio of locals we headed back across the dam and it was as I crossed the bouy line that
marks the bubbler line that my lure was hit and I was on.
the fish put up the typical bass fight before being brought yakside and I slid the net under a small bass just under
30cm.A quick pic and away we went again,a quick run to the eastern bouy then back again resulted in another bass
round the 38cm mark.Eric stopped and cast for a bit while I kept going west then turned for another run but after another run
without success we headed east past the camping ground
the breeze had died and we headed round the corner into a bay and once again I felt my lure slammed by another fish
the weight felt good but soon after the fish came up and we discovered why.there was a huge chunk of weed wrapped
around him and i think it weighed more than the fish.
another quick release and we headed south chatting as good mates do about anything to do with fishing
overhead two eagles circled and one dived down to snatch a bony bream off the surface but the water must have been
cold because he baulked at the first attempt as one does when you dip your foot into freezing cold water
on his second go he was successful and flew off with his meal .
shortly after my lure was slammed again and by now Eric was ribbing me about heading home as I had said I was due back before
lunch.
We headed back across the dam to the ramp and apart from another strike just near the ramp we saw no further action.
After packing up and exchanging goodbyes I headed south back down the highway to home
All in all another great morning in good company with enough fish to give me my fishing fix before heading west for another
month.

work like you dont need the money and fish as though you dont need to eat

Great report Dave, and welcome back to the land of the living. Good to see you got to wet the yak on ya time off before all this bad weather sets in over the weekend apparently.

Shaun and myself have been playing around in the Cooroy pond over the last few weeks with mixed results. Our Bass have come from heavily weeded areas casting and jigging lures in about 20 feet of water, through and over the top of this weed up near 3 ways. We found the Bass schooling up in great numbers throughout other parts of the lake too but the times I was there found it hard to temp them to strike a lure.

I found a really good site where the lakes arms, bays and points have been given names, here's the link. Just click on the flags to show the names of various areas of the lake.

Sorry Steve, last minute decision, last Thursday's session. Have you got anything planned for this weekend? I'm keen to do something not too far from home on Sunday weather pending. Maybe hitting Lake Mac again???

Dave
one thing I noticed yesterday and it brought to mind something Fitzy told us at wivenhoe a couple of years
ago was that the fish seemed to like the lures when the speed was a bit quicker than usual
this was borne out when the last strike came about just after I began to wind in the lure while still
trolling as we neared the ramp

Did you take some gear with you this time Dave? Good luck mate, September is around the corner for some wild stuff. Catch ya when ya get back.

Are you going to down size your yak soon as mentioned?

Dave
