Carp rigs and bait
« on: March 19, 2012, 10:03:38 AM »
While on the Dumaresq this weekend I saw a lot of carp and because the cod fishing was slow I was thinking about taking a rod set up for carp fishing next time. Might as well catch some fish and do the river a favour while I am at it.

Having never been carp fishing before I was wanting to know what set up you guys would recommend and the best bait to use. Steve said he thought corn was good but had never targetted them before.

Corn or worms near or on the bottom . only need about a size 6 hook nothing fancy. If mulberry trees are overhanging the river use ripe mulberrys with no weight they go ballistic over them, Just go find mulberry trees and sit and watch under them for a while most of the time there will be a swarm of carp under it when ripe.

Great fun on light gear.

From watching Pam I have come to realise that a 1/2oz Codman Spinnerbait in Purple is the way to go......

Corn works, but I've had no success in that area with it, same with bread / dough.
Best bait for Carp that I've used in the Dumaresq is shrimp. Just ordinary, caught in a funnel trip, freshwater shrimp. big carp there too.
I have caught one on a small minnow lure, but shrimp is one fish per bait stuff. Size 4 or 6 mosquito hook, very small sinker.

Tinned Sweet corn kernels and a size 4 hook on the bottom. Cover the hook totally in kernels.

I usually also burley heavily with creamed corn and the odd handful of corn kernels. Gets them chewing across the bottom until they spot the group of 5 or 6 kernels altogether and they grab it quick.

They fight hard, but fair, they wont usually run for snags etc.

Here are a few from a Condamine trip a couple of years ago. When they get up around the 70-80cm mark they go pretty hard!
