Title: Richmond Bass
Post by: takrat on December 08, 2012, 06:18:35 PM
A mate and I went out chasing some bass Friday morning and after a 5.00am launch, fisnished back at the ramp with 7 fish for the morning all in the 35-38cm range. This was all very good but on the negative side I somehow managed to lose my Alfas reel and Samaki Rod over the side in 10m of water.
We got our heads togther and decided that we simply had to go and try and recover the gear. So after a bit of cobbling in my garage we put together a rod and reel retriever and went back to the scene of the disaster. After a few tries we snagged the leader at the lure attached and thought we had it beaten, but no the rod was lodged in something, a snag we believed and we ended up pulling in all the line then it snapped off. To most people this would have been the end of things but we decided to keep at it. Eventually by dropping the retriever out fro the shore and dragging it slowly across the bottom we were rewarded with the recovery of a rod and reel totally unharmed. It has since been stripped, dried and re-lubricated and will be on the way to Clarrie Hall with me next week. I really like happy endings.

Hey Prof, Your right about the lanyard mate, I was thinking about it yesterday, is there a product like that you can get? Baitacasters are a bit vulnerable to loss like that. By the way Bungawalbyn is not doing too well there's something going on upstream and it's very dirty. My mate and I had a beer in the Coraki Pub on the rod recovery. I'll have to do a picture of the patented rod recovery tool.

Sounds like a ripper rod recoverer JD. Can you slip out & get that Daiwa combo I lost in the Dumaresq for me mate? Was pre flood when I lost it so its probably down around the Barwon right now...........

I don't do lanyards, I'd rather lose a rod than get caught up in string & lose something more important......  :OMG

I'll see what I can do for you Fitzy, miracles just take a little longer. Will a missing rod and reel show up on structure scan?
Steven, thanks mate, I was sort of looking at the vacant spot in the rod rack and wondering about the meaning of it all... then I realised I was just careless.

Gidday John,

You could try to adapt something like this....    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Kayak-Boating-Fishing-Safety-Lanyard-Lip-Grips-Scissors-Pliers-Rods-Reels-/261063852021?pt=AU_Accessories_Tackle&hash=item3cc89e3ff5 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Kayak-Boating-Fishing-Safety-Lanyard-Lip-Grips-Scissors-Pliers-Rods-Reels-/261063852021?pt=AU_Accessories_Tackle&hash=item3cc89e3ff5)

Let me know when the Bunga clears up mate I've got my canoe all ready now with a bow mount, just gotta set up some roof racks for my 4X4.

Cheers :thumbsup
