Prawn haul costs fisho
« on: July 11, 2011, 09:00:37 PM »
This is a salt thread but i thought it might be of interest. The Prawns off woodgate have been around in massive numbers (and Size) for about 6 weeks. I dunno how they are getting away with it but the pro's are dragging nets through the school (in a yellow zone) reportedly taking 1500 kilos. Everyone who's rocked up gets their quota in an hour or two. I guess it got too much for one guy who deceided to take more than his share. Apparently the Fisheries caught him and have confiscated his boat! Good, about time i hope a few more get caught. The prawn school was still there today..that's roughly 6 weeks it's been there now. Quite phenominal there must be millions of them.
Meanwhile, I spoke to the guy who caught the 73cm Bass and he is adamant he has the picture and will get it to me! Don't hold yer breath... :)

Hi John, as you know I spent last week at Woodgate & there would have been up to a dozen boats at any one time out in front of the general store. I heard reports of 2 kg of prawns per cast & one bloke I spoke to said his biggest went 9 inches long ( but no photo ). ::)

Cheers Andrew

Hi Andrew, I can't give a pic but can varify the length of the prawns. Two of my mates were fishing there and brought me a kilo of prawns. Biggest prawns I've ever seen. The yellow zone in Woodgate is too small it needs to stretch from theodalite creek to the southern side of burrum heads. There are those that have tried to get this passed but it gets knocked back.
Hope you had a good time. Didn't leave anything behind did ya?   ;)

It's a big school. They are still on! I even had Bruce page (Tv Presenter) in the shop buyin stuff and wanting info on the Prawns. He said word was out..lol. I told him they've been here for months. At least I get a claim to fame outta it!  ;)
There have been some good catches of barra here too. My mate happened across a metre plus barra. unfortunately dead with it's tail bitten off. A decent Barra was caught when the woodgate fishing club had a comp last weekend.
Plenty of yellow Belly caught in the burnett river near Booyal crossing.
