Knots

Knots would be one of the most important parts of anyone's fishing set up, even more now since braid has almost completely surpassed mono for most sport fisho's. Like most I've got a copy of Geoff Wilson's book plus a small waterproof version in the boat. However, I tend to remain fairly simplistic with my knots. Double Uni for light line joins, Improved Albright for heavier leaders. Then there's a single Uni or locked blood for terminal knots and a Loop knot for when I don't want to use a split ring, (or can't). Doubles I haardly ever use although if I was chasing pond donkeys in Awoonga or Monduran that might change. I have always believed in the KISS principle, but that's just me.

Reckon I cover 98% of my fishing with 3 knots; albright knot (variants of), clinch knot & loop knot.

Pretty much just the teo for me. Improved albright for leaders and uni knot to connect trminals. I actually use the uni as my loop knot as well. This is because ubder a certain pressure the uni knot as a loop will pull tight which actually forces me to retie my knot as the lures(especially the smaller ones) stop working properly. Doubles are tied in game and popping gear buut I don't often get out to do that stuff

Only use 3 knots regularly.
Improved Albright
Rapala (loop knot) for any lure I can take the split ring off
locked blood knot for bait fishing or for lures you cant take the split ring off.
Rarely used, but in the tool box, is the hangman's noose, just in case I ever catch any of those share farmers....

Onya Binder, I'll have to get one of those nooses. Geez Dale I'm pleased you can tie your own shoes, I'm still in thongs.

Just to add a note to this post, I sat down tonight and played with a couple of knots. One was the Slim Beauty, the other was a similar knot recommended by Bill Classon in one of his video's. I then tied my usual Albright and found that the Albright was by far the least bulky. Now it's poosiblt that I cocked up the other knots but I don't think so. The Albraight has only ever failed me once and that was my fault for not pulling it tight enough. Also after having lost a nice Cod and a lure due to knot and angler failure I now check my knots after each capture and / or drag thru the shrubbery. Some say the Albright is unreliable but I have never had a problem at least when I do my part correctly.

Biggest problem I have noticed with the Albright(even though I still use it) is it can become comprimised whith constant casting through guides when using heavier leaders in the order of 20lb or more. I use two methods to combat this. Firstly check your knot regularly and retie when even a little suspect and secondly I put larger guides on rods if needed. If you have the ability to do this it is well woth the effort.

KISS yep that's what I do. I used the double uni for joining lines (braid to leader)although I now use a simple method of making a loop in the leader. Passing main line through the loop and winding around both the leader and the leader tag end about ten times before passing it (the way it came through) back through the loop and tightening. My other main knot is to form a loop (through the eye, back up the main line and pinch together 60mm). Then wind around the loop just formed back towards the eye 5-6 times. Through the gap between the two lines at the eye then back through the two lines at the top where the loop was first formed. Dunno what it's called a deckie showed me it years ago. It's been good to me.

Hey Brett, Thats the only downside to the Albright, but checking it after each cast is good. That's how I lost the Cod, forgot to check and sure enough it came undone. I'm joining 60lb leader to 30lb braid with no problems
