Barbless Trebbles
« on: January 19, 2012, 07:05:19 PM »
Hi Fellas after a bit of feedback if you could please.

I am in the process of crushing the barbs on my lures again.  (First time was after a spell in the hospital having one cut out)

Last week I spent a good hour inflicting pain on 6 to 8 small Bass and it takes a few minutes to get 2 sets of hooks from the poor little buggers.  I don't think I will have a lot problems landing Bass and Goldens on barbless lures, Cod will be more of a challenge.

But, at what point do I stop ?  I guess I shouldn't touch the Barra lures.

Also I get into the salt a little these days (sorry Fitzy).  I don't see any problems with Bream and Flathead fishing barbless.  What do you think if I am chasing Jacks.

Any tips would be appreciated fellas.

Regards Gordon

Don't worriy about barras throwing a set of trebles with the barbs removed.  Been catching them for years on them.  Here's one of a few from yesterday, you can see the barbs have been turned down :thumbsup.

I'd be doing it as a standard for any fish.

Gordon, I've got a couple boxes of barbless VMC size 2 trebles in the shed from memory. either 4x or 6x. (Factory made barbless)

I have always been going to throw them on some barra lures but never got around to it. If you want some for trialing on some cod lures let me know and I'll see if I can surface them..

Thanks for that fellas.    Dick, if it works out in the wilds it should be okay with our domesticated fish down here.  I will have to work on that knot of yours also.

Might take you up on 4 of those hooks if I could Binder.

Will send you a PM

Regards Gordon

Gordon,
I went barbless a fair while back after trying to get a barbed treble out of the the eye socket of a Bass. I've since crushed every barb on all lures for Barra, Bass and Cod. Can't speak for Barra as yet but I'm yet to lose a Cod or a Bass due to a lack of barbs. I also thing hook penetration is improved,
Go crush 'em matey,
JD

Thanks for that JD.

I heard that last week regarding better hook penetration.  It makes sense.  And with the modern rods with the quick response plus braid the fish never get slack line.

Thanks again fellas

Gordon
