Title: The blame game starts
Post by: aussiebasser on January 20, 2011, 09:58:14 AM
Hearing a lot of reports of people blaming the management of Lake Wivenhoe of the floods in Brisbane and Ipswich.  It's a bit frustrating to see these professors coming out of the woodwork and saying the dam was originally designed as a "dry" dam and purely for flood mitigation.  That was true when it was designed, but the population has increased so much since the '80's that things are different.  Imagine if it was empty at the start of our drought.   Anyway, I don't normally get vocal to the press, but I couldn't let this one slide.  Here's my opinion as published on a news site:
Quote
I'm not sure why so many are now looking to blame someone (See Engineer warned on dam 10 years ago: report, January 19). In the last 10 years, since the dingo made his report, the capacity of Lake Wivenhoe has been doubled. Yes, it was at 100% but we'd had a drought for 10 years. If they had dumped water earlier the "press" would have criticised the waste.

I live 6 km from Lake Wivenhoe. Please, you reporters, stop sitting in your office and making 20/20 hindsight decisions and come out here to help the devastated locals rebuild. It rained, a lot, it flooded. Let's start an enquiry to see if Noah built his ark early enough. He left it too late to save the unicorns, what could he have done differently?

Pointing the finger is how everyone expects things to get fixed/done .... Not true and it agrovates me something chronic. Well done for speaking up.

Take Fernvale for example , which did the most damage? The flash flood on Tuesday morning caused by the 500mm or the inundation caused by the river later that night . From the Pocket side of the river , the flash flooding from that mornings rain had dropped considerably by late afternoon , but by then the river was starting to get to scary levels .

Driving through Fernvale this morning on the brisbane Valley hwy , the damage there appears to me,  to be more from the flash flooding which came from behind Woolies and from the creek near the servo ( just my observation from the direction of flattened structures and I didn't venture down any of the streets ) .

Wivenhoe was already releasing due to high levels ( less than 110% ) when this new rain hit . The river was charged with a level similar to all the other releases since last October . It was just bad luck to get 500mm in a morning while managing the flood compartment , which seemed to coincide with the massive peak in Lockyer creek , all the stars alligned .  As Fitzy said , if the saddle dam went too , it could have been so much worse .

Of course  , its easy to imagine the low life scum oxygen thief lawyers lining up for some class action against Seqwater and the State Govt.

Cheers,
Dave.

You're right Dave.  Fervale was hit by the flash from the hills to the west.  The river didn't come up that high.  SEQWater did a bloody good job, and in the end we all got lucky because it stopped raining.  Take a drive from Lowood to Coominya next time you're out and about.

It seems it doesn't really matter that much how much truth there is in the story.  Just make it doom and gloom and the public seem to lap it up.  Sometimes I think the media especially channel 8 + 1 were disappointed it didn't surpass '74 heights.  It would have been a much better story had the new recent record been achieved.  Cynical I know but I just wonder sometimes.

Hope you guys out that way are going out ok there.

Cheers

I've already been told by one property owner downstream of the Wivenhoe Dam that he intends to seek compensation from SEQWater for damage to his property, specifically to the washed out banks which are actually crown land & he (possibly illegally) runs his cattle running on. I asked if this guy had all his marbles.....
If it wasn't for the Wivenhoe Dam & its operation he may have lost his cattle, his house & his life.

Some people...............  :o

Good on you Dale - lets prosecute the mongrel who caused the demise of the unicorn  ;D

Cant let these environmental vandals get away with such atrocities!

As for SEQ Water, I'm sure they probably caused the extinction of a 4 spot green sided left handed frog that only lived on the Wivanhoe spillway by releasing water! Lets do them to!  C:-)

Bloody greens have a wonderful outlook on life don't they, I wonder when the open their tiny rose coloured skylights, do they expect the clouds to part and the suns gentle rays to caress them..

Coal Miners don't burn coal, they dig it out of the ground...and generate thousands of jobs while they are at it.

The steel and power industries burn it. Lets blame them  :walkplank
The government makes millions of dollars in royalties on coal exports.... :walkplank

The greens are ANTI COAL POWER.... ANTI NUCLEAR POWER...ANTI TIDAL POWER....ANTI WIND POWER.....

I wonder how they will look sitting in the dark, eating cold raw meat, and drinking untreated water ::)

Good thoughts Dale, I'm sick and bloody tired of what the Yanks call Monday morning quarterbacks. There is little wonder we Australians are a cynical bunch. On one hand you've got politicians who couldn't lie straight in bed and on the other Greens who are anti everything except women with armpit hair. If SEQ water hade not done what they did the results would have been much worse. Imaging the carnage if Wivenhoe had burst. The release of water is what's called a safety factor.
Cheers,
JD

Good comments above. This is where the odd balls come out of the woodwork.

Looking at Browns article, was it mining that put 14.5 m of water through Condamine in 1891 and again in 1942.

How do we muzzle those people. Ask them about global warming in 10 years when it is not flavor of the month.

Global warming only a part of the planet's evolution. There have been two ice ages in that development back hundreds of thousands of years. Who would they have blamed for them? Farting mammoths and excessive cooking fires perhaps. I just think it's a little arrogant to think that the current crop of occupants of planet Earth are entirely to blame. But that always returns to the nub of the post; the blame game.
