Planning for SEQ’s future water use

A blueprint for the flexible and cost-effective management of South East Queensland’s (SEQs) water resources has been released for public consultation.

Acting Minister for Energy and Water Supply Andrew Cripps said the time was right for Seqwater to start developing a long-term strategy for maintaining water security in the region.

“With dams in the south east almost full, now is the perfect time to develop a long-term strategy to manage our most precious resource,” Mr Cripps said.

“This discussion paper is about ensuring there is adequate planning for proactive and cost-effective management, and that the region will always have enough water to meet our essential water needs.

“This will prevent the reactive, costly response that occurred during the water crisis in the mid-2000s.

“We must be proactive in our approach to planning a more secure and affordable water supply for future residents and businesses. We need a new, adaptive management approach to give greater flexibility and make better use of the water assets we already have.

“Our role today is to ensure there is always enough water to meet the region’s potable water needs, during flood, drought and all times in between.

“Part of our approach is to create new service objectives setting the ‘minimum’ requirements to make sure we have enough water to use in a drought situation.”

South east Queensland businesses, community groups and individuals are encouraged to take part in the consultation process by reading the discussion paper released today and putting forward their ideas about how to best manage our water by 31 December 2013.

Feedback will be considered along with hydrological modelling results and economic analysis to prescribe the revised desired level of service objectives by mid-2014.
