Title: Where have all the Wivenhoe fish gone.
Post by: A Marshall on June 20, 2014, 05:31:32 PM
Went for another explore in Wivenhoe today, launched at Billy's Bay, down to the buoy line across to Platypus cliffs up through the Horse Paddock back across to the cliffs on the eastern side & back to Billy's all for one lousy Powertail. This is my third outing in Wivenhoe since I bought the new motor & todays fish has been the only one. I could not find any schools & any individual fish I did find had a serious case of lock jaw. Might have to hit the salt if this keeps up. Has anyone else been fishing it & how have you found it?

Cheers Andrew

Andrew

It usually takes me sometimes up to eight trips out there during the start of winter to crack the code.

I was with a group of kayakers a month back and some of us did catch fish but they were yella's. Fish were scattered across the flats out from Logans between the river channel and Pelican Island. A couple weeks back in the boat I found schools off the rock wall on the river channel on the way down to one tree straight out from Logans.. but they had massive Lock Jaw. Might even had been Tilapia.

I have never caught a Bass out from Hamons, ever. So hitting Logans Sunday with the Steven in my new boat and we are going to slay them. I will be trolling out of Logans and then heading across the paddock to Brads Point. sh!t might even go down to the buoy line, havent been there for years, but the bass have to be there somewhere. Sure alot poured out in the floods into the river, but still alot must have poured out of somerset into Wivy.

So hang in there, they will turn up and we will be there to catch them when they do..

Now here's the big fella with a bass way before the floods, the man sure can attract the big girls, from memory this one was 58cm I think..

Hmmmm .... was thinking of having a crack at big W on Thursday. Looks like the odds are stacked against success. Oh well, looks like it should be a good day for it.
I'll bring the coffee to go with the expected donut.

Yeah ..... haven't been on the water since the Texas trip with Wayne D. If nothing else, the exercise will do me good.

I'm keen to try out these deep divers and sinking lures . Last time I launched from branch creek , and went under bridge to area with standing timber . My friend caught a huge golden perch under that bridge . How long would it take to paddle from bridge to Billy's bay ? Or how fare do you think it is?

On the map it doesn't look to fare from bridge to Billy's bay will definitely be hitting that up when I get back to Brisbane , trawling lures from kayak .

That is all part of Billy's Bay, but is suppose it would take about half an hour to paddle to the boat ramp.

Done that several times. Takes roughly half hour paddling at cruising speed (depending on your kayak), quite a bit longer if you are trolling a lure.

I wouldn't go all the way to the boat ramp, there is plenty of good water closer to the bridge than that.

Went out a couple of weekends ago Andrew when it was blowing a Gail ended up with one cattie ,found a few on the sounder but couldn't hold position due to wind, am going to persevere and try to fish as much as possible this winter  and hopefully find them, if nothing else it is still a great dam to be out on

Since Wivenhoe was opened to 4 strokes we have been fishing it very regularly to some success, although it's a massive body of water and we've barely scratched the surface.

There were an abundance of pan size yellas schooling up in the warmer months and there were trips when we would have easily landed 30-40 trolling to lunch - best Yella we boated went 16lbs. Over winter the Yella schools seem to have dispersed or should I say they have moved on from the spots we were regularly catching them - seems like the fish have spread over winter and instead of picking them up in schools we are travelling further and picking them up more randomly.

We haven't been as successful with the bass and they have accounted for about 1 in 8 fish caught, few have been pushing 50cm but nothing to really to write home about - any schools we found were primarily smaller fish.

We have been downrigging extensively and taking about 60% of the fish directly under the boat, barely a rod length off the bomb.

Tried to upload some pics to no avail .... wouldn't accept .jpg files  :?) Help ....

Cheers

It's set to accept both jpeg & jpg but occasionally doesn't like the look of them for some reason.

You can now send attachments via PM (personal message). Send them to me & I'll load them for you.  :youbeauty

Cheers,

Ok, finally worked out how to load pics - just didn't seem to like me 'Previewing' them  :-\

Pics are typical Wivenhoe fish we've caught since the dam opened to 4 strokes - heaps of schooling Yellas about the same size in the pic, rarer couple of nice bass and a stonker 16lb yella .... caught on Mini or Shallow Tonks flat trolled and downrigged :thumbsup

Cheers

Some nice Bronze and Gold there Rob, you seem to have that downrigging for Natives sussed  :thumbsup

That Shallow Tonk reminds me of a lure I have seen before  ;)

Cheers Brad

Hi Brad - absolutely, the bib on the Shallow Tonk was all your idea to get maximum action but shallow depth, just applied it to the Tonks and we're up and away :thumbsup

Gives you a great downrigging solution that allows the lure to follow the plane of the bomb ....

Cheers

Well done Rob,

Good specimens, different colourations might reflect the habitat they tend to stay in I guess.

Never used lures for bass, I would not know what lure brand, weight or colour works on them, all I ever used was live shrimp.

Cheers, Bondy
