Last blast
« on: May 30, 2012, 07:00:29 PM »
I had my last blast at the bass for the season this morning having my first entry to the Brissie via Harpeng rd (thanks Dale & Fitzy). The climb out is way better than Shines but even still after 5 hours in the saddle the legs felt it. I only managed to land 4 fish between 28 & 32-3 cm and got broken off twice. I must say I was a little dissapointed hoping to land one of the big girls but the 10lb leader may not have been enough  :'( If your down there tomorrow keep an eye out for a couple of floaters you may just get a bonus. Cheers Pat

You need to gear up for Jacks there, 10lb leader won't cut it.  Glad you got some though.

Mangrove jack gear.  Big Bass in the snags are very similar to Jacks and light leaders will let you down.

Well done Pat I agree with the trek out, its trying to get a grip with your feet while pulling your yak uphill that does the damage to the legs, need to put on a set of spikes.

What was nice though was getting in and out of the yak without getting my feet wet -Pussy yes but those toes were snuggly in their Explorers I even had to take off one layer (shirt) when the sun came out  8). It was a decision to take the lighter 10 lb gear instead of the 14 lb as I wanted to be able to cast smaller lures but still manage spinner baits. I had the fly rod with me and didn't want to have three rods even two adds to clutter. The bummer about the lost fish is I never even got a "fight" or even dragged back into the snags the lures were broken off on the hit. The first one the lure stopped on the retrieve, lifted the rod and PING leader snapped just above the lure knot. The second one on the troll back the fish pulled drag for a sec,rod loaded PING again this time the leader snapped at the braid to leader knot. 20lb leader maybe needed. Cheers Pat

Some of the yellas are that strong around the head area they will break fingers if not handled properly.
