Record number of recreation visitors in 2013
Posted  17 January 2014  - SEQWater

Holiday makers and day trippers flocked to Seqwater’s recreation areas over the Christmas New Year break with more than 160,000 people visiting the lakes to enjoy a range of outdoor recreation facilities.

These visitor numbers bring the 2013 total to over 2.6 million visitors, the largest number of people to ever visit our recreation sites in a single year.

The dams and catchments across the region offer some of Australia’s most enjoyable recreation experiences, from camping, fishing and canoeing through to the more high-octane pursuits of water skiing and jet skiing.

The high visitor numbers follow on from the huge interest in our recreation management review, which kicked off June 2013. Just over six months into the review, the response has been very encouraging, with more than 3000 organisations and individuals taking the opportunity to help shape the future of recreation at our dams and catchments.

The review will continue over the coming months, with consultation on future recreation opportunities at more lakes across the region, as well as the release of the resulting lake recreation guides and management plans.

The most popular recreation sites over the holidays were lakes Wivenhoe, Somerset and Samsonvale (North Pine Dam) and Hinze Dam. The activities on offer at these lakes include fishing, canoeing, bush walking and picnicking, making them great places to relax over the holiday break.

Not all activities are available at all of the dams, so visitors should check before heading out.

We are commited to balancing the ongoing health of the catchments and quality of the region’s drinking water supply, while providing access to a range of water-based and on-shore activities.
