Snub Nosed Gar for Cabomba Weed Control?
« on: January 07, 2012, 04:00:41 PM »
I noticed some years ago that after we introduced Snub Nosed Gar to Lake Somerset, that in the following years the extensive weed beds there seemed to disappear at the same as the gar popluation exploded. The gar went through a boom-&-bust cycle there then settled down in a more consistent population.

With Cabomba caroliniana weed in (I believe) Lakes Kurwongbah, LaccDonald, Ewen Maddock, Cooloolabin in SE Qld, I don't think that these lakes happen to have snub nosed gar, while the weed hasn't managed to spread to those lakes that DO have snub nosed gar.

I've often wondered the trialing snub nosed gar as a cabomba weed control agent has been tried or considered?

What do you think?

PRFMA introduced gar into Kurwongbah several years ago but I have no idea how they have survived.

Prfma had a few goes as putting Gar in to Kurwongbah, but none seem to have resulted in the sort of Gar population seen in North Pine.

It took the Cania Dam group 5 attepts to get gar to take there. We got it first hit in Somerset.

Used to have Gar on our permit for Caboolture lakes. Think we tossed them off to allow for Mary Cod.

No reason why you could not get a translocation permit if you wanted to Andrew.

Would be very interesting ... Maroon is one of the worst dams ive seen for cabomba not that i have seen extensive amounts of dams but it is pushing out from the banks at least 30 sometimes 40 meters offshore and bays are completely swamped in them making them near impossible to fish unless 100lb flipping gear is used.

Im pretty sure Maroon does not have snub nosed gar or boney bream ... even tho there are clouds of firetail gudgeons they are too far down the food chain to look after the cabomba..

Go have a look Fitzy i think a trail should be run even if only in few thousand ltr tanks downscaled

It's bad in Clarrie Hall as well, and getting worse. That dam is owned by Rous water tho. Have no idea what they would say.

Cabomba is a weed of National Significance, therefore is eligible for funding under the Federal Governement's CFOC program http://www.nrm.gov.au/funding/index.html

Would be a nice little project for a group to pick up on providing there was some anedotal info to suggest that the gar may actuially have some impact.

An isolated dam, not too big and not to thick of weed would be a good start.

Funding call finishes in early Feb btw

The introduction of gar into cressbrook saw the disappearance of shrimp to the extent that live bait fishermen ignored th law and caught shrimp in perserverene for use in cressbrook   I'd hate to see gar turn in to the cane toad of the water
They are a pain to fly fishermen

Be more inclined to point the finger at Redclaw for some of the massive reduction in macrophytes in a few of the SEQ impoundments rather than Gar.
