Title: Losing the Mojo and Maybe a Unicorn?
Post by: Bracey on September 25, 2011, 08:06:27 PM
Today was the first time I've had the chance to really do some of my favourite fishing, chasing Bass in the upper reaches of local creeks around the Sunshine Coast even though the Bass season has been open for several weeks.

I had picked a creek I know like the back of my hands after I had a absolutely dismal winter fishing wise, turning myself away from the freshwater after countless donut sessions in the impoundments and fishing more in the salt. However, catching bread and butter species was fun but not as challenging, with my heart still lying with freshwater species.

I introduced a mate to this river system for the first which also didn't really fire like I'd hoped it would, talking it up whilst launching. The water was warm and the water clarity couldn't be any better. To say I was confident was an understatment. We hit the water before light almost getting carried away to the next post code due the mozzies. As the sun came up, a swarm of flying ant insects had left their nests and the many small Mullet within the river system were taking full advantage of a feed as these insects fell to a watery grave. Whilst this feeding was taking place, Ross changed to a small crank lure and was rewarded with one of these mullet.

Many casts were thrown to likely spots along the river bank, only to hear one boof from an active Bass hitting the surface, yet not encounting any hits. A change of lure was needed, still fishing surface using a Zara Puppy which had never seen water let alone caught a fish. As the creek got tighter in the upper reaches my confidence rose again. I finally found a good area where fish were holding only to lose three good Bass almost in consecutive casts. The bow waves following the lure were big, bigger than I've ever seen from any Bass before, getting a glimps of the last fish which could have been a Unicorn, unfortunatley the fish bricked me and losing my lure as well around an underlying snag.

Yet again, going home defeated, but knowing one day I'll crack that magic 50cm mark.

Cheers Dave

Thanks Pat,

Today's session has revitalised my passion again, especially that last fish. I had too longer lead on it with the creek being maybe 3 metres wide when it hit the lure amongst a log jambed section. I didn't have much hope really, but great fun.
