Hi. I'm taking some kids camping at Wivenhoe next month. It's a first time visit and we'll be fishing off the bank. Any fishing or camping information would be appreciated bearing in mind they haven't been fishing or camping :OMG
We'll take along some opera traps and various baits. I just want them to catch something to get the feel of it or they probably won't want to do it again.

I'm far from an expert on the subject,but my family and I have fished logans inlet/lumley hill before,with only a catfish to show for it.Both places are pretty places to camp.I guess you could google wivenhoe dam camping sites for site costs.
Nice places to swim,kayak,etc too.
I don't know if there are any redclaw in wivenhoe,for your opera house traps.
Try prawns/shrimp for bait,soft plastics,and even spinnerbaits.
Catfish to yellowbelly/bass ratio would be 10-1 but kids don't care.They fight really well.

Thanks heaps for the info. I googled the camp sites but the feedback about the conditions of the toilets etc hasn't been good - as below...
(And the urinals still aren't fixed. Toilets are filthy. No toilet paper. Coming here for years when under previous management.. Always left happy..... These new guys need to pick up their game....)
When last were you there and was it ok?

I haven't camped there,but the toilets I used on a day trip were acceptable.I wouldn't say they were spotless,but useable.:-)

Would be a shame to see the campgrounds go downhill, I have always enjoyed my stays out there in the past.

I just read the reports of the poor camping area that you referred to. I would read all of the reports rather than just the one which complained about them.

I've been to Wivenhoe Dam countless times, the amenities have always been spotless, however there are some animals that do leave a mess, pee over the seat, have a bog and don't flush ,that includes shopping centres.
As for redlcaw, yes they can be found in Wivenhoe, its a large catchment, bigger redclaw you need a boat. I've seen quite a few about 12 inches and slightly bigger. It's a matter of right water temperature, vegetation conditions and water level. Catfish, bass and Cormorants also feed on redclaw, verified by gut content analysis.

Thanks for those latest comments. It's true there are comments for and against the conditions but the most recent ones seemed to be the problem. As you say, it just depends on who's been there before you :-\
With regards to the fishing, we'll take it as it comes...one way or another it will be an experience for them!

An old saying said by Dave Brown as in the original "Brownies Creek to Coast" which I still remember. "Don't destroy what you come to enjoy".
Unfortunately there a few that don't adhere to that message.
