Seqwater Flood Operations Centre
2 Feb 2013 - Seqwater

Wivenhoe Dam is currently being operated to mitigate the impact of heavy rain associated with Ex Tropical Cyclone Oswald which has affected South East Queensland.  There are currently no flood operations at Somerset Dam, North Pine Dam and Leslie Harrison Dam.

A Temporary Full Supply Level was declared for Wivenhoe and North Pine Dams last Friday, and Seqwater lowered the dams to these levels prior to the onset of heavy rain in the dam catchment areas.  The Temporary Full Supply Level for North Pine Dam was revoked on Tuesday 29 January.

Seqwater is liaising closely with the Bureau of Meteorology and all impacted councils have been contacted and advised of the potential for flood releases.

Somerset/Wivenhoe dams

As at 6.00am today, Wivenhoe Dam is storing 109.7%, a decrease from yesterday’s level of 121.3%. Wivenhoe Dam is currently operating under the drain down strategy, with controlled releases continuing at a rate of approximately 1,800 cubic metres per second.

At this stage flood operation releases will continue until next Tuesday morning. However normal operational releases (i.e. after flood releases are complete) may remain elevated after this time to assist with reducing the turbidity levels in the mid-Brisbane River. These elevated operational releases may continue to inundate Twin Bridges.

The following expected bridge impacts are dependent on no further significant rainfall occurring:

Burtons Bridge and Kholo Bridge are currently closed and are likely to remain closed until Monday.
Savages Crossing and Colleges Crossing are currently closed and are likely to remain closed until Tuesday.
Twin Bridges is currently closed and may remain closed until 12 February 2013 depending on the magnitude of the operational releases needed to manage the water quality issues at the Mt Crosby Water Treatment Plant. Updates on this issue will be made as further information becomes available.
As at 6.00am today, Somerset Dam is storing 99.3%, a slight increase from yesterday’s level of 98.6%

There are no flood releases occurring at Somerset Dam.

North Pine Dam

As at 6.00am today, North Pine Dam is storing 93.8%, a slight decrease from yesterday’s level of 93.9%.

There are no flood releases occurring at North Pine Dam.

Leslie Harrison Dam

As at 6.00am today, Leslie Harrison Dam is storing 91.9%, a slight increase from yesterday’s level of 91.7%.

There are no flood releases occurring at Leslie Harrison Dam.

Un-gated dams

Due to recent rainfall in the catchment, the following un-gated dams are currently spilling:

Atkinson Dam
Baroon Pocket Dam
Borumba Dam
Cedar Pocket Dam
Cooloolabin Dam
Enoggera Dam
Gold Creek Dam
Hinze Dam
Lake Macdonald
Lake Manchester
Little Nerang Dam
Maroon Dam
Moogerah Dam
Nindooinbah Dam
Wappa Dam
Wyaralong Dam

Residents should contact their respective councils for any further information about possible impacts in their local area.

Hinze Dam

Hinze Dam is currently spilling – the first time since the Hinze Dam Stage Three upgrade was completed. The $395 million Hinze Dam Stage Three upgrade saw the dam wall raised by 15 metres, doubling the dam’s capacity and providing increased water security and flood mitigation.

Recreation area update

All Seqwater lakes are currently closed to water-based recreation activities (e.g. swimming, boating etc.) in the interests of public health and safety. All boat ramps will be closed until further notice.
Most Seqwater sites are open to land-based activities (e.g. picnics, BBQs etc.) however Seqwater is urging caution to all visitors as conditions may have changed at the sites due to the recent extreme weather event.

The following Seqwater recreation areas are closed until further notice in the interest of public safety:

Baroon Pocket Dam spillway lookout and southern recreation area
Great Walk at Baroon Pocket Dam (closed by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service)
Borumba Dam at Imbil is closed due to flooding and road closures
Moogerhah Dam Lower Recreation Area is closed where the road requires work to clear fallen rocks and debris
The mountain bike trails at Wyaralong Dam are closed as the access road is flooded.
Lake Wivenhoe campsites remain closed

The Lake Wivenhoe campsites, Captain Logan and Lumley Hill, remain closed until further notice.

If you have a booking at either site, please contact us on 1800 737 928 to organise a refund.

Hinze Dam recreation area and Visitors Centre reopened

The Hinze Dam recreation area and the Hinze Dam Interpretive Visitors Centre have both reopened.

Seqwater urges visitors to take care if using the recreation area and does not recommend undertaking water based recreation activities due to fast flowing water and debris. Remember to check with seqwater for the latest public notices and recreation area closures, and ensure you check road conditions with councils and the Department of Transport and Main Roads before travelling.

I normally go to western ramp.

OK Ray then you will relate to this picture taken on the western arm on Wednesday 6th.

It's a  picture of the old closed gravel ramp, where the gate was locked when the newer ramp opened, distance from the gate to the water's edge was only 35 paces.

Recreation facilities - closures and safety UPDATE (Monday, 11 February)
Water-based recreation activities

On Tuesday 29 January 2013, all Seqwater lakes were CLOSED to water-based recreation activities in the interests of public health and safety, as a result of the significant rain event.

The following lakes have been re-opened to water-based recreation activities:
Lake Macdonald – re-opened to all permitted water-based recreation activities
Ewen Maddock Dam – re-opened to all permitted water-based recreation activities
Baroon Pocket Dam – re-opened to boating, kayaking and canoeing, (swimming area remains closed)
Lake Kurwongbah – re-opened to all permitted water-based recreation activities
Lake Wivenhoe – re-opened to all permitted water-based recreation activities
Lake Atkinson – re-opened to all permitted water-based recreation activities
Lake Dyer (Bill Gunn Dam) – re-opened to all permitted water-based recreation activities
Lake Samsonvale (North Pine Dam) – re-opened to all permitted water-based recreation activities
Lake Somerset – re-opened to all permitted water-based recreation activities
Lake Borumba – re-opened to all permitted water-based recreation activities
Lake Moogerah – re-opened to all permitted water-based recreation activities
Lake Wyaralong – re-opened to all permitted water-based recreation activities

The following lakes remain temporarily CLOSED to water-based recreation activities:
Lake Maroon
Hinze Dam (Advancetown Lake) – The main recreation area near the dam wall, including the Visitor Centre, is open for land-based recreation activities

Due to the significant in-flows into the lakes over the past week, there could be fast-flowing water, debris, and obstacles in the lakes presenting potential hazards to recreation users. In addition, Seqwater will continue to monitor for water quality issues as a result of the weather event.

Although water levels are returning to full supply levels, temporary lake closures will remain in place until further advice regarding water quality and general safety is available. Seqwater is collecting samples for water testing and checking trails and recreation areas for fallen vegetation and other obstacles.

It may be some days before Seqwater is in a position to re-open all lakes to water-based recreation activities.

While lakes are officially closed to recreation activities, signage will be placed at each boat ramp advising of the temporary closure. If visitors ignore this lake closure, then they do so at their own risk. Remember, your safety is our concern, but safety is your responsibility.

Land-based recreation activities
The majority of Seqwater recreation areas and camping grounds have been re-opened to visitors – at some sites, recreation areas are open for land-based activities, such as picnics and bbqs, with boat ramps remaining closed. Seqwater is urging caution to all visitors as conditions may have changed at the sites doe to the extreme weather event.

Following is a list of the recreation areas that remain closed for various reasons:
CLOSED – Baroon Pocket - Great Walk at Baroon Pocket Dam (closed by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service)
CLOSED – Lake Moogerah - Lower Recreation Area (Reynolds Creek) is closed due to fallen rocks and debris on access road.
CLOSED – Little Nerang Dam – access road is closed due to storm damage. Will remain closed until further notice.
Wyaralong Dam – Both the Eastern and Western Trail Head recreation areas are open, Mount Joyce Mountain Bike downhill trails open, Mt Joyce Base Camp open
CLOSED – Boat ramp at Eastern Trailhead, Shoreline Trail, and Ridgeline Trail are CLOSED
CLOSED – Goan's Hill Trails – closed from Tuesday 12 to Friday 15 February for planned vegetation maintenance.

Visitors to all Seqwater sites are urged to take precautions and exercise care when visiting due to debris and the possible damage to infrastructure and trees.

Bit strange Maroon was open over the weekend with heaps of ski boats and fishos launching from public ramp and other camping areas.
Is Hinze western arm still locked up?
 Cheers
Ray
