Had to go up to Miriamvale to pick up a 4wd camper trailer off my sis, so good mate Corey decided to come with me to share driving and perhaps overshoot Miriamvale for a Boyne barra sesh - so instead of taking it steady and driving all day Saturday to get there myself we powered up direct from home (Nthn NSW) after dinner Friday night - got there bout 2am (8hrs) - set up a camp had a rum night cap and decided we should flick a poper before bed - BOOF - 1st kick off barra at 3am (69cm) - went to bed and got 2 hrs sleep then up for the dawn sesh out of the kayak - paddled all the way up to the top hole and found another four fish along the way most around 55cm but one keeper at 59cm, came back to base for a couple of hour camp in the middle of the day caught up on a few Zeds then back for the arvo sesh - found another four fish, two more keepers 59 and 73 cm - all gave a good accound of themeselves on spin tackle - all except the popper caught fish were caught on squidgy dark-gold fleck shads with plain heads - worked around snags and endges of current line weed beds at the bottom of runs. Appreciated fishing out of a kayak as it tended to make us work the water bit more thoroughly than some fellas cruising past in dingys to the 'epi centre snags/spots' - also think the ol stealth factor helped heaps - seems as though some fellas were caught up using techniques that worked for them 1-2 weeks preceding when the water/flow was higher and the barra run was going gang busters - i.e. using ripped poppers in the middle of the day and big hard bodies mid water column - finesse twitching softies seemed to be the order of the day once the flow and barrra run drops off a bit - we were lucky to miss the rain pssing down north and south of us (had a stary night) - but figure the left over tropical low moving through is likely to get another serious barra run going especially if the volumne of water going over the Awonga spillway cranks up ! :youbeauty

Well done. In my opinion Yaks certainly are the best fishing option in estuaries, however......
Had a video emailed to me last night - of a bloke working a barra in a boat, apparently near Townsville. Had it to the boat, just working the last of the sauce out of it, fish breaking the surface with a couple of little runs left in it, net bloke poised to grab the fish, when the water next to the boat opened up to a huge croc which proceeded to have barra for lunch.
I've changed my mind about fishing from a kayak in waters that hold crocs!

Yeah seen that video too Binder, It comes from Barratta Ck mouth - near my hometown Ayr. I've fished Barratta Ck up in the fresh from a kayak and had a close encounter of a similar kind which swore me off using Kayaks in swallowmagotcha country - Where we were fishing up in the Boyne is in the fresh above tidal influence and is above known croc range in the memory of most locals although they are known from the lower tidal reaches. I'll still use my kayak in big freshwater rivers that hold crocs if they are predominantly clear and shallow and the big holes can be skirted (Upper Herbert, Wenlock for example - though have passed by some big lizards in both) - carrying stainless steel croc repellent doesn't hurt confidence either though reality is if one was goning to take you, more times than not you wouldn't get a chance to use it - deep dark rivers or estuaries I save for the tinny ! :thumbsup

Just found out that video actually comes from the NT not north Queesland - it was BS that it was Barratta Ck - but there are equivalent lizards in there !

We're booked in at Gateway Lodge for Easter and I don't know if I should take the boat for the lake or the yaks for the river.

I worked with crocs for 5 years. I know exactly what they are capable of and how easily they can hide in even shallow clear water. I will nnever, ever go into croc water in a Kayak or Canoe.

Yeah thats the same video. I would have clenched the old but checks so tight I would have been constipated for a week if it had been me!

Lot's of beeps in that footage especially after the lizard shows up. I don't know Binder, looks like a sure fire sphincter relaxant to me...

A croc thought a 175hp outboard was a biscuit the other day. Guys on board sh#t themselves.
Boogie board = Shark Biscuit..
Kayak = Croc Biscuit..
Only a matter of time before somone sticking their hands in the water to retrieve or swim a fish is grabbed.
Some tests have just rated Croc jaws as the most powerfull going around.
