Title: Severn River - Qld
Post by: Sweetwater on December 19, 2010, 10:27:11 PM
Here's some pictures from a recent fishing trip on the Severn River - Qld.

Access was from a public access point, travelling via kayaks down river to the harder to get at places. There was a bit of a flow in the river which made moving up & downstream possible, would be walking only if there's no flow.

Biggest cod as 65cm which isn't too bad for this river.

Have a couple of hours of video footage from the trip which I might edit together if there's interest.

Cheers,

fitzy..

Yep, bottom end of Broadwater end of Sundown NP.

Would only do it if there's a flow, & only a small flow. A bigger flow could be dangerous.  :walkplank

Video I have shows the terrain much better, but its all too big for youtube. Might have to dump it onto a DVD.

Cheers,

Is that flow you mentiond all natural runoff or released from a dam ?

2 inches of rain is keeping the "scenic rim" beaudesert shire rivers and creeks up pretty high and none managable.

All natural flows Steve. Can be quite variable, from none to flash flooding, all depends on rainfall upstream of the gorge.

Good report Fitzy, I've only fished the Severn at one of the private properties in the gorge section, and for one reason or another never got back. Looks like a New Years resolution coming up. Love fishing that skinny water.
Cheers,

Hi Guys, just been checking the river heights & things seem to be getting back to normal.
I am planning on heading into Sundown for a quick look next weekend & if all is ok will be planning on heading down for a few days fishing & exploring from Australia day. Would be happy for anyone who wants to tag along. Let me know if you are interested & we can organise meeting times.

Cheers Andrew

A Yak is no good Norm, I think we need a helicopter first. I went out there last Friday with the yak & the kids only to find the park closed due to flood damage. Girraween national park was also closed for the same reason, changed our plans & went an explored the Severn River falls  & climbed Bald Rock instead. Will post some photos of the falls tonight. The river is still a bit high for comfortable paddling. I will keep an eye on the park reopening & hopefully plan another trip down there soon.

Cheers Andrew

Hi guys , yes you will find places like Girraween are actually closed. I live right at the northern approach and all our roads have been washed out severely, 1.5 metre trenches in places. Because I have had trouble getting out I haven't been able to check anything out but you WILL find washouts everywhere. Storm King is closed as well.

The water is still flowing across the roads but it is slowing, so it may be not too much longer before the area opens up again.

If you want a "girl" in the loop when you reschedule I am only 20 mins from Ballandeen. Understand if you don't though. I am shaking for lack of fishing of late.

Hi Pam
There has been a lot of damage to roads & bridges all over the place, we actually tried to get to Girraween along the back road from Storm King only to find it closed & then went back through Eukey to Ballandean & around. It will take councils a lot of time & money to repair all the infastructure. Tried to get up to Cressbrook yesterday for a look but the road up the range from Esk has been washed away so we ended up having our Autralia Day picnic on the back deck at home.

I will let you know when I'm coming up again, would be happy to have another local along for a fish, I grew up in Ballandean & would love to be able to move back to the area.
Know what you mean about lack of fishing time, hoefully going to make it down to Maroon this Saturday arvo for a top water session, fingers crossed.

Cheers Andrew

Andrew, Maroon was an absolute shamozil on wed arvo with campers lining the bank 4 rows thick ... could have been an australia day thing but jee there where no spots to launch .

If you head out there sat arvy you may well run into me , want to give the depth sounder a proper run.

Went out to Maroon Sat arvo, fished right through till dark for zip, was nice on the water once the wind died down.
Didn't see you on your yak Bushwacker, did talk to a couple of young local guys who said they were getting some catties(eeltails) on bait.
