Walkers and runners to explore new trail at Lake Baroon

Enjoy taking a hike or going on a trail run? The Martin Williams Walk at Lake Baroon has received an upgrade, with a one kilometre extension of the existing trail.

Located in the Southern Recreation Area at Lake Baroon, the original trail was built by the lake’s first ranger, Martin Williams. As a result of feedback received during the recreation review, a new loop section has been added to the existing trail, providing bush walkers and trail runners with additional green space to explore.

The Martin Williams Walk extension was funded by the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing. This trail is open to walkers and trail runners - mountain bikes and horses are not permitted. We thank you for your feedback during the review, and hope you enjoy this fantastic addition to the Lake Baroon trail network.

Put the sausages on the BBQ!

Who doesn’t love a good bbq lunch overlooking a picturesque lake! Next time you are in the Noosa area, why not drop into Lake Macdonald and enjoy the stunning views. A new bbq has been installed at Mary River Cod Park, enhancing what is already a popular destination. Further improvements to the parks at Lake Macdonald are on the way.

Happy visitors flock to Hinze Dam

Arguably one of the Gold Coast’s best attractions, Hinze Dam is a recognised destination for locals and visitors alike. Those who have visited Hinze Dam recently may have noticed some improvements to various areas around the lake, which we have implemented following feedback received during the recreation review.

Rigging and de-rigging areas have been established at the Western and Eastern Boat Ramps, providing boaties with a designated space to prepare their vessel prior to launching. We've also installed more directional signage at the lake and parks to help you get around the site with ease.

We listened to your feedback, and as a result, a shade sail was installed over the playground at Picnic Parkland. The installation was completed late March and was funded by the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing. We hope our younger visitors enjoy this much needed shade.

There is still more to come….we are working on a number of other improvements for Hinze Dam, including establishing a paddle craft launch point at the Western Boat Ramp, so stay tuned for further updates!

It's time to discover the serenity of Lake Clarendon

Located north-east of Gatton, Lake Clarendon provides water to the Central Lockyer Valley Irrigation Scheme. The community expressed their desire to access the lake for recreation during our recreation review. As a result, for the first time under our management, we have introduced some passive recreational activities at the lake. Paddling and fishing are now permitted, and a walking trail has been established for bird watching.

Paddle craft are able to access the lake via the Lockyer Valley Regional Council picnic area located off Main Green Swamp Road. A gate has been installed to allow visitors to access the lake, with the launching and retrieval of paddle craft available from the shoreline directly in front of the picnic area. Please be considerate of our neighbours and only access the lake from the dedicated area and keep the gate shut when not in use.

Those keen to put a line in will be happy to hear that fishing is now permitted from paddle craft, as well as from the shoreline of the paddle craft launching area. The lake is not currently stocked with fish, and no fishing permit is required. Lake Clarendon is an irrigation dam and provides water for agricultural purposes, therefore lake levels will fluctuate frequently. Always exercise care when recreating on and around the lake.

Known for its prolific bird life, the area around Lake Clarendon is a wildlife enthusiast's paradise. We have established a walking trail below the dam wall to enable visitors to view the abundant wildlife living in and around the lake. Please respect the tranquillity of the area by not disturbing the wildlife – this is their home after all!

No one likes a fine!

If you are looking to fish at one of our lakes, make sure you check whether fishing is permitted, if you need a permit, and understand the state rules and regulations. A number of lakes also require a boating permit for certain vessels. Visit our website for further details.

Our eyes and ears on the ground…

Those who visited our lakes this past summer may have come across our Compliance Team - our on the ground staff members responsible for keeping our lakes and parks safe and enjoyable. Working alongside our Rangers, the Compliance Team is responsible for ensuring the safe and fair recreation use of our lakes, so everyone can enjoy them.

During the recreation review, it was highlighted that some members of the community are not complying with rules and regulations, and sometimes illegal activities happen at our sites. As a result, we now have a team of dedicated staff and have increased our lake and land patrols.

Our Compliance Team and Rangers carry out regular patrols, often alongside the Queensland Police Service and Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol. These patrols allow staff across various agencies to monitor lake and park usage while also ensuring visitors are complying to current rules and regulations including appropriate vessel registration and licencing, the correct use of life jackets, speed restrictions and conducting random breath tests.

But our Compliance Team and Rangers don’t just enforce rules and regulations. We like hearing about what is and isn’t working across our sites, and we are always happy to assist where possible, often by providing information about the site, giving out directions, and assisting lake users to safely recreate.

So next time you see a Ranger at one of our lakes, make sure you stop to say hi and remember to Play it Safe!

Your safety is important – please remain vigilant

Sunshine one day, raining the next! The recent weather, particularly the large rain falls, around South East Queensland has highlighted the need for all users to remain vigilant when recreating at our lakes. As a result of the recent rain, conditions at our lakes and recreation areas may have changed.

However it is not just excessive rain that can cause conditions at our lakes to change. Periods of low rain or drought, or increased usage at our irrigation dams, often result in a lower water level at some of our lakes. If you are the skipper of a vessel or boat, it is your responsibility to ensure that the conditions are suitable for your particular activity. Submerged hazards including debris and natural hazards may be present, so lake users are reminded to remain vigilant at all times. You can keep yourself and your passengers’ safe by:

- checking the area you intend to use to determine whether it is safe for your activity
- keeping a proper lookout when using towing apparatus
- maintaining a safe speed suitable for the conditions, and
- wearing your life jacket.

Until next time, stay safe!
