Title: buying a SIP for Hinze Dam
Post by: Dodge on August 27, 2016, 04:38:01 PM
We now have the welcomed change from Hinze Fishing permit to use of a SIP, and is good.

Recently a mate went to get his new SIP to use at Hinze and followed the recommendation shown on DAF website

{quote]
A SIP can be purchased:

    online
over the counter at Queensland and selected NSW Australia Post outlets
at selected sub-agent outlets throughout the state.
via phone on 1300 575 359 (permit purchases only, for general SIPS enquiries phone 13 25 23).
[end quote]

Went into a local post office and they did not know what he was talking about when he asked for a SIP, after he explained she googled it on her mobile phone and said we do not sell these.

He eventually got one online, but the no availability at the PO info seems a problem.

The Gold Coast is a tourist area, and in winter when the grey army arrive Hinze is popular fishing hole, and when asked most do not have a fish permit, meaning in the past fish are taken with no help to the stocking group with funds.

Generally when mentioned the majority say they will get a permit after it is explained.

But with SIP now being the required permit, doubt many will fiddle around buying one online, whereas if it can be bought at the PO as advertised, think most would buy one when shopping next time.

Seems it will be the stocking group that is the loser in the long run if SIP purchase is not easy.

The local SEQ water rangers have been politely reminding people that a SIP permit is required.
No doubt that fisheries will get around to providing signage at some time.
Rather strange that the rangers never reminded people that they needed a permit prior to the dam coming on the SIP scheme.

Ray the last time any fishing permit was ever mentioned to blokes I fish with at Hinze goes back to the days when GCCC were responsible for operations at Hinze, and the GCCC rangers could sell also visitors a permit from their utility.

When SEQW took over operations there, I had a yarn to their ranger about visitors buying permits and he said they were only interested in water quality and the property around the ramp, if visitors wanted a fish permit go to the dam kiosk which is useless to anyone arriving early.

My concern is the stocking group missing out on funds again if no local simple way of buying a SIP for casual visitors to the area, for locals it is OK as we buy the SIP annually so online is OK.

Perhaps someone could invent a vending machine, like the parking meter ones, to place at the dams so we can purchase our permits easy, they could offer evan daily ones this way for the casual fisho

Richo not all Australia post outlets are selling the SIP permit, I believe that some of the franchised stores don't. This link on the DAF website shows the Australia Post outlets where SIP permits are available. http://qgsp.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=94c3a8206aae4f249021f0d27cf7565d (http://qgsp.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=94c3a8206aae4f249021f0d27cf7565d)
If it is one of these we'd be interested to know.

Hi Steve a bit off subject but are there any intentions of installing signage to the new waters or are there problems with people knocking them off all the time?

Steve the nearest large PO to Hinze is located at Nerang, and now know of at least 4-5 blokes who could not get a SIP there.

Last bloke said the fella behind counter at the PO was helpful looked up some website and said there were only 3 POs sold them, all in Brisbane none on GC and a couple in NSW.

Regular fishing locals are all buying over the phone so no problem.

My beef remains since introduction of SIP at Hinze, visitors fishing the dam [mostly grey army from my encounters] will not stuff around unless buying a SIP is made easy ..... so the only loser is funding for the stocking group.

G'day Dodge,

Every location will have its own little issues I'm sure. Consider the rural locations, some of these don't even have mobile coverage to get one on the net..... Alot worse than Hinze. Not having one is no excuse.

The issue with allowing third parties to sell / collect SIP fees is that they have in the past collected monies & done a runner with the money. The fishery is the loser. At least via internet & PO the money can't get knocked off.

Richo
I have attached a list of Australia Post outlets in the Gold Coast region that sell SIPS. There are 585 Australia Post outlets across Queensland and Northern NSW that sell SIPS. We have had a few outlets that have turned customers away because the staff were not aware how to sell the permits. We have followed these up with Australia Post management and they have resolved these on a case by case basis. Australia Post has also put out further communication to all of the 585 stores advising them how to sell the permits. If you hear of any outlets still turning customers away we would like to know the outlets name so the issue can be resolved moving forwards.

Cheers
Steve
