End of Season Central Qld Wild Barra
« on: November 02, 2011, 08:30:57 AM »
I had been promising to take my dad camping on this coastal Central Qld waterhole ever since I did some environmental work on it in 2005-6 because it looks so similar to where my dad used to live in the Gulf of Carpenteria (Bluehole - LawnHill), finally the stars aligned and we got there before the end of the 2011 barra season - not a lot of fish were caught (7 hooked, two landed over day and half) , but a lot of fun was had!!

Best fish lost (~650) was to my son Jules on his own home made lure (put a puff in his chest), dad got one on shitter pop in front of teh camp at night, keeper was on a live striped grunter (lost what was probably a good Jack on a livie as well) - all other hook ups were on SPs - squidgee shads.

We could of gone fishing impoundments for much bigger barra, but must admit love the aesthetics of a natural creek and its fringing forests and the specialness of finding wild barra in habitat that still 'works' !!

Nice spot Jim, I did some work up on Lawn Hill station once and there's some great water there. I have to agree on your sentiments about natural water V impoundments. THe fish may not be as big but that's not everything. That's why I Cod fish on the Dumaresq instead of the dams.
Good work on the young blokes flure too,
Cheers amte,
John

My guess would be Raglan / Inkerman. There's a nice little weir around Raglan that has some fish quietly liberated into it by some friendly fisher folks around the place.

You're prettty honed in geographically Fitzy - but these fish are wild, their recruitment has been improved in the last decade with a rock ramp fish way - limestone ncatchment creek, beautiful water !
