Know the fishing rules before you cast out

People looking to enjoy a spot of freshwater fishing in the Western Downs are reminded to familiarise themselves with rules about where they can and can't fish.
The reminder comes after nearly $5,000 in fines were recently issued to people not following recreational fishing rules at Mt Crosby Weir, west of Brisbane.
Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) field officer Aaron McAdam said fishers need to be aware of their local closed water areas, such as those near weirs along the Condamine River.
"The Chinchilla Weir is closed to all forms of fishing 200m downstream of the weir wall and 200m upstream," Mr McAdam said.
"All fishing at the Loudon Weir is closed 200m downstream of the weir wall and 400m upstream."
Mr McAdam said signs were in place advising fishers of the closed waters in the Chinchilla and Loudon weir areas, and it was the responsibility of all fishers to know the rules before heading out.
"Officers conduct regular patrols of these areas and those found fishing in closed waters could be liable for a $400 fine," he said.
"Closed waters are designed to help preserve our freshwater fish stock in areas where they may be vulnerable to overfishing.
"Fishers can view the rules online at www.fisheries.qld.gov.au (http://www.fisheries.qld.gov.au) and can always call one of the local QBFP offices prior to heading out for details on any regulations specific to an area they plan to fish."
