National Recreational Fishing Conference
« on: February 20, 2012, 10:31:48 AM »
Casting Towards Tomorrow

"Casting towards tomorrow - keeping Australia fishing" will be the theme of the National
Recreational Fishing conference to be held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition
Centre on 17-19 August 2012 with the future of recreational fishing clearly in its sights.
Conference committee member Bill Sawynok said, "The future of fishing is in the hands of
the next generation of fishers so that a range of incentives will be provided to attract younger
fishers to the conference. This will include holding a fishing competition prior to the
conference and providing access to the Australian Fishing Trade Association Tackle Trade
Show which will be held following the conference at the same venue."
Recfish Australia Chairman Russell Conway said, "We are keen to understand and promote
the role of recreational fishing in contributing to the health and well being of Australian
society. This and the economic contribution of fishing, especially to regional communities,
often gets overlooked in debates about fishing."
A number of high profile speakers will be invited to provide keynote addresses on how they
see the future. This will include an international perspective on the future of recreational
fishing, how to bridge the gap between the current and upcoming generation of leaders and
a view of fishing from the younger generation. These keynote speeches will set the scene for
some very interesting presentations which will all be squarely focused on the future.
"Having a healthy and sustainable fishery is important to the tackle and boating industries in
Australia, which employ around 90,000 people in recreational fishing related jobs, so we are
keen to support the conference and we will be encouraging industry members to support
and sponsor young fishers to attend." said Allan Hansard Chief Executive of the Australian
Fishing Trade Association.
The conference website is at www.recfishing2012.com.au and a Facebook page is being
developed to keep everyone informed of progress towards the conference with registrations
commencing in March 2012. Funding for the conference has been provided by the
Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the Fisheries Research and
Development Corporation.
