Canberra Visit
« on: April 12, 2011, 07:37:35 PM »
Had a work meeeting in Canberra last Friday so booked my return flight for Monday morning to get the chance to catch up with family friends and revisit a few old local haunts to see how the fish and the habitats are tracking after the major droughts, fires and floods that have occurred since I lived there 10 years ago.  Set my self a tick list of five fish cod, golden, redfin, brown and rainbow to attempt over the weekend and only managed 2 (goldens and redfin), thouigh missed a few cod and realy didn't travel far enough afield for the trout as my local trout honey holes were still a bit dirty and warm to produce - though I did see a few brownies rising and predict a couple o fthose spots will go off in a month or two when the temps drop and pre breeding feeding goes up a notch. Was lovely to see the ol place, if it wasn't for winter minimums I could of lived there a lot longer than I did - still great to revisit though. The Murrumbidgee was looking really flushed out and I'd reckon next season's native fishing is looking good!

No doubr about it Jim, you're a man on a mission, PNG one day, Canberra the next. I'll bet the town founded on BS was big yawn after PNG. I'm betting you didn't use the same gear in both places.
Good work mate,
JD

Yeah JD I'm on a mission to fit as much fishing into my life as opportunity presents and I'm fortunate that work overlaps with that mission on occassion :thumbsup, but I don't find Canberra fishing a yawn - it actually gives me a buzz and I miss it a bit as I had some real great experiences when I lived there years ago i.e. pet 30 and 40 lb cod caught and released few times, 50cm + brownies, big goldens and Murrumbidgee Bonefish (AKA Carp) on fly and coming across rare jewels like Macquarie Perch (see pics), and while I didn't break out the Black Bass rig on this trip ::), you'll see in the photos that the spinning gear I used on Golden Mahseer in PNG is the same as what I used on Golden Perch on the Murrumbidgee ;D
My motto with regard to fishing is that the best is the closest at hand  ;)

G'Day Jim,

Nice images, thanks for sharing.  :thanks

That country you fished at Canberra, was that area affected by the bush fires a few years back?

Last time I went through there alot of country still looked badly affected from those fires.

Cheers,

fitz..

RE: Bushfire affected, the Molonglo River catchment wasn't affected Fitzy and the reach of the Murrumbidgee I fish wasn't directly burnt but had filled up with bushfire derrived sediment, the latest peak flood early this year (biggest in ages) has completely rheemed it out though and re-instated the deep holes :thumbsup

Jim,
The Murrumbidgee looks to be in good nick; nice clean water by the look of it. Things never looked that good when I lived there, but that was back in the '70's and I shot rabbits near Molonglo.

JD,

I used to shoot rabits near the Molonglo as well. Property owner 20 mins out of town gave me permission to hunt bunnies and foxes on his place. For a capital city with all the urbane and metropolitan BS - still had a great outdoor life there from home in Downer I could be in 20 minutes in 3 different directions - trout fishing, cod and yella fishing or fox and bunny chasing  :thumbsup - even the city lake produced a few good goldens and plenty of redfin for me - just too cold... and the BS in the working environment  ::)  for anyone working in natural resource management - you need to experience how the BS works and doesn't work and then get out of the place :o - back to warmer climes 8)
